Dementia – a set of symptoms associated with progressive brain decline – is prevalent among the elderly but it’s not directly caused by the ageing process.
Although Old age is a risk factor for dementia, other factors can be, including intake of lithium.
A New research published in the journal PLOS Medicine suggests exposure to lithium may influence your risk of developing dementia.
In this research, scientists looked back at medical records from nearly 30,000 UK volunteers including 548 people exposed to lithium, the majority of whom received it as a treatment for bipolar disorder.
Those exposed to lithium, 9.7 percent of patients were also subsequently diagnosed with dementia.
