The Lagos State Federal Controller of Works has confirmed that the Third Mainland Bridge would be undergoing repairs that’ll necessitate it’s shut down for six months, OYOGist.com has confirmed.
The spokesperson for the Lagos Federal Controller of Works, Olukayode Popoola revealed that consultations are currently ongoing to enable another phase of refurbishing on the 11.8km bridge.
The bridge would be closed for maintenance starting from the 24th of July.
Third Mainland bridge is the longest and busiest bridge in Nigeria.
Popoola further revealed that the initial repair exercise on the bridge would start from the mainland aspect of the bridge. According to him, the ministry has already started engaging relevant agencies to redirect traffic during the period of the shutdown.
OYOGist.com recalls that in 2018, the Third Mainland Bridge was also shut down for 3 days for an investigative maintenance check.
Several reports of some worn-out expansion joints have been noticed on the structure, raising concerns over the safety of the bridge.
This development means thousands of motorists in Lagos who ply the bridge daily would begin to make arrangements for alternative routes.
