Tottenham Hotspur and England star Dele Alli has been slammed with a one match ban over a social media post in coronavirus. He has also been slammed with a £50,000 fine, and has been ordered to take an educational course.
The 24-year old put out a Snapchat video back in February which seemed to mock an Asian man while joking about the covid-19 outbreak. In the video, Alli was wearing a facemask in an Airport lounge, and he directed the camera to an Asian man, zooming in on a bottle of antiseptic on His hand.
He quickly deleted the video before catching his flight, but has now said that he must have been ‘betrayed’ by a friend who sold the video to the media.
He said in a statement:
“In response to the FA decision, I would like to apologise again for any offence caused by my behaviour. It was an extremely poorly judged joke about a virus that has now affected us more than we could ever have imagined.”
“I’m grateful that the FA has confirmed that my actions were not racist because I despise racism of any kind. We all need to be mindful of the words and actions we use and how they can be perceived by others.”
He is now set to miss Tottenham’s clash with Manchester United in the Premier League in June 19.
