When Harry announced that he and Meghan Markle would quite their roles and ‘senior’ members of the Royal family, he chose his wife over the Queen.
Harry and his wife, Meghan will no longer perform important roles as members of the Royal Family anymore. They have chosen to be financially independent and live outside of Windsor Palace. This decision also came as a shock to the queen, who has expressed her disappointment in Harry’s decision.
However, what is not known to most is that the Queen was quite a powerful figure in Harry’s life before he met his wife Meghan.
Harry grew to rely on his grandmother, The Queen, as the only significant female role model in his life after the death of his mother Princess Diana in 1997. Harry, then a 12-year old boy, was “patently shattered” by the news of his mother’s death and had to rely on Queen Elizabeth II as a mother figure then.
The Queen also grew so fond of Harry that a picture of Granny smiling at Harry in his Sandhurst passing out ceremony became an iconic image.
Another woman came and changed everything.
When rumors started that Harry and American actress and star of Netflix hit-series Suits were dating each other came out, they couldn’t do enough to dispell those rumors. They were seen in public on several occasions holding each others’ hands, a romantic gesture the Palace shies away from, and had several dates that paparazzi caught.
They had a lavish wedding ceremony, and it was obvious that Harry was smitten in love with Meghan.
Soon, rumors of troubles with Meghan conforming with Royal traditions began to filter to the media. Meghan also grew frustrated by the constant harassing from the media and wanted a different life from the traditional Royal one.
Harry had to support his wife, so he chose to follow her heart-desire and step-down from the role of ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family, risking losing millions of pounds in funding that comes with the position.
