The vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on 11 December 2019, in a meeting with first-class rulers and monarchs in the country, opened the General Assembly of the National Council of Traditional Rulers.
The vice president presided over the meeting and opened the council on behalf of the president who is out of the country on a trip to the ASWAN Peace Mission in Egypt.
“In a society like ours, Traditional rulers play a pivotal role in citizen-to-citizen ombudsmanship, and are naturally recognized as a linkage or ‘brokering’ grassroots and government policy implementation,” said Prof. Osinbajo in a statement.
“Their roles, which include conflict resolution, judicial gate-keeping and serving as institutional safety-valve for overloaded and subapportioned bureaucracies, are key to government’s responsibility at ensuring peace, unity and development.
