The Iron Dome, a multi-mission system is designed to intercept and destroy short range rockets and various air defence (V-SHORAD) systems as well as aircraft, helicopters and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Oyogist.com gathered.
The Iron Dome system comprises of an all-weather system and can engage multiple targets simultaneously and be deployed over land and sea.
The radar system was developed by Elta. It’s development was prompted after a series of rocket attacks on Israel by Hezbollah and Hamas in the 2000s.
In the 2006 Lebanon war, around 4,000 rockets were fired on the northern parts of Israel resulting in the death of about 44 Israeli civilians and evacuation of around 250,000 citizens following the development of the system was taken up.
In recent times, the system has performed well but it’s currently faced with some limitations ( when it’s overwhelmed by series of missles).
A video had earlier surfaced online, showing the moment a huge missle was intercepted by the iron Dome over Tel Aviv and central Israel.
See Video Below;
Another key feature of the iron Dome is it’s ability to intercept a certain of projectiles when overwhelmed by capable adversary.
