Following the widespread protests that have erupted in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police officer, Derek Chauvin, the city has began several changes to its justice department, OYOGist.com has gathered.
These moves are so huge, the city council members have signaled an intention to scrap the police department entirely and move to a community-based public safety model.
According to NPR, nine out of the members of Minneapolis City Council have already pledged support for “dismantling” the city’s police department.
“We will be taking intermediate steps toward ending the MPD through the budget process and other policy and budget decisions over the coming weeks and months,” Andrea Jenkins a council member, and Lisa Bender the council president announced.
