The world is witnessing the end of the United States of America led order and the emergence of an Asian century, says European Union top chief. During an address of a gathering of German ambassadors on Monday, European Union Foreign Policy Chief Joseph Borrell was quoted to have said, “Analysts have long talked about the end of an American-led system and the arrival of an Asian century … This is now happening in front of our eyes,”
He said that the coronavirus pandemic can be viewed as a “shifting point” in the change of influence from the West (America) to the East (Asia). He went on to state that the European Union has been caught in the middle, as the regional block is under intense pressure to choose a side.
Borrell further stated that the European Union must follow their own values and interests and they should avoid being used as an instrument by either the Americans or Asians.
The top diplomat went on to say that there is currently a high demand for alliances with multiple countries to achieve common goals and that this was the first time in several decades that the United States of America was not leading the world in the reaction to a crisis.
Borrell went on to warn that the competition between the United States and the People Republic of China has a lot of negative impacts on multilateralism (multiple alliances pursuing common goals).
