Some new studies have revealed that the Coronavirus has mutated and is now very likely to be more contagious than before, OYOGist.com has gathered.
According to the report, the mutated strain of the new Coronavirus started from Europe in early March and have traveled to several other countries, including the US and Canada.
This new strain, according to the report, is very likely to undermine the efforts of scientists working on a potential vaccine for the COVID-19 as the vaccines’ effectiveness relies on the scientists isolating some genetic sequences isolated by health authorities at the start of the outbreak.
The findings that revealed this darning report was conducted by researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and was published in a 33-page report that was released on Biorxiv.org Thursday.
According to the studies, if the Coronavirus does’t come under control towards the summer, there is the potential risk that it could further mutate and render the vaccines being developed by scientists ineffective.
Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, the lead author of the report, Bette Korber, who is a computational biologist at Los Alamos said,”this is hard news, but please don’t only be disheartened by it.
“Our team at LANL was able to document this mutation and its impact on transmission only because of a massive global effort of clinical people and experimental groups, who make new sequences of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) in their local communities available as quickly as they possibly can.”
As the number of confirmed cases continues to rise around the globe, scientists are working round the clock to ensure that a vaccine to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus is discovered as quickly as possible.
