The Netflix movie, The First Temptation of Christ, which was initially banned by a court in Brazil for its portrayal of Jesus Christ as a gay has now been restored in a ruling handed by Brazil’s supreme court.

In passing his ruling, the president of Brazil’s supreme court, José Antonio Dias Toffoli declared, “It is not to be assumed that a humorous satire has the magic power to undermine the values of the Christian faith, whose existence goes back more than two thousand years.”

A judge in Rio de Janeiro had ordered the removal of the film from Netflix. The company, instead, filed an official complaint with the country’s highest court.

A petition filed by a Brazilian Catholic body that claimed that the airing of The First Temptation of Christ on Netflix hurt the “honor of millions of Catholics” got the film banned earlier.

The Netflix lawyers were able to get the supreme court to rule in their favour on the grounds of censorship.
