A 20ft wall collapsed into several buildings in a village 30 miles north of Coimbatore, southern India, burying at least 17 people in their sleep.

According to a police report, the wall collapsed at exactly 5:30 am, crushing at least four houses — with people in them. The victims of the accident include two teenagers, two seven-year-olds and older relatives. Emergency responders are trying to see if there are more victims.

The government of India announced that there will be a compensation of 4,000 rupees (20,217.64 nairas) per dead for the surviving relatives of the victims.

Heavy rains have continued to pummel the most of Tamil Nadu, a coastal region bordering towards the southeast coast of the Indian peninsula.

According to weather reports, heavier rains are expected in the region within the next 24 hours.
