OYOGist.com has learned that Reno Omokri who was the former aide to ex-Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has come out to say that America’s stance of supporting Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee as the next WTO Director-General is only for political reasons and America’s stance will change after the US Presidential elections which comes up on Tuesday, 3 November 2020.
To explain the reasoning behind his claim Reno Omokri pointed out that in the US there are 1.7 million Koreans compared to a smaller 380,000 Nigerians. Of course for his own interest Donald Trump figured that showing a public support for Yoo Myung-hee could sway those Koreans to vote for him.
However, that is not what America is making the world believe. Based on the statement released on Wednesday from the office of US Trade representative, they stated clearly that they support the Korean because of her years of experience as a successful trade negotiator and as a trade policy maker. From the statement the US also pointed out they believe she has all the necessary skills to be an effective leader of the organisation.
Fortunately for Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, America’s opinion may not likely matter as long as the majority who supported her also votes in her favour. But that is if the US doesn’t eventually change their stance after the elections like Reno Omokri claimed and it comes down to voting by each member country.
The WTO will have their next meeting on November 9 after the US election to decide on who will be the next director general and that is when they might have to vote.
