The Governor of Kaduna State has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the residents of the state and barred movement from other neighboring states, OYOGist.com has learned.

According to reports, the curfew was imposed after measures to prevent the Covid-19 virus from hitting the state were ignored.

Speaking during a broadcast on Thursday, the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe said the decision observed Quarantine Act provisions allowed in the 1999 constitution.

“In exercise of the powers vested in the Governor by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria1999, (as amended), Sections 2 and 8 of the Quarantine Act 1926 and the Kaduna State Public Health Law of 1917,’’ Balarabe said.

Balarabe said that the State had, as a result, been declared a public health center and coronavirus is thus declared a dangerous, infectious disease within the meaning of the Quarantine Act.

The Deputy Governor explained that the measure is to prevent the pandemic from reaching Kaduna as the state does not have the capacity to manage it should there be an outbreak.

The Governor further banned all gatherings, including churches, mosques and all forms of ceremonies in the state. Businesses are also expected to shut down as well, with the exception of critical services such as healthcare workers.

The lockdown which took effect from midnight of Thursday 26th March, according to Balarabe, is expected to last till the pandemic is over.

Already, users are already sharing videos of law enforcement officers punishing residents caught outside after the curfew was imposed.
