Four police officers attached to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have been arrested for allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an illegal stop-and-search operation in Abuja.
The arrests were announced on Monday by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, who described the officers as criminals unworthy of wearing the police uniform. According to him, the officers had abandoned their assigned duty posts and set up an unauthorized checkpoint around the Banex area of Wuse, where they allegedly targeted motorists for extortion.
Sanusi revealed that the officers were unaware they had stopped the ICPC chairman. He said they allegedly forced Dr. Aliyu to withdraw ₦53,000 through a Point of Sale (POS) operator, including transaction charges, before sharing the money among themselves.
Following investigations, the command declared the officers wanted before apprehending their alleged gang leader. His confession reportedly led to the arrest of the remaining members of the group.
The police commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to rooting out corruption and misconduct within the force, stressing that officers found guilty of abusing public trust would face disciplinary action in line with the law.
