7 African startups advancing aquaculture, analytics, and access to finance

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 6, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Spotlight on African Innovators highlights startups across Africa tackling local challenges through cutting-edge solutions. In our last issue, we showcased seven transformative ventures revolutionizing sectors such as research, e-commerce, healthcare, arts, and logistics. Look out for our upcoming edition on December 5, 2025.

This edition introduces seven promising African startups operating in health, research, aquaculture, finance, and funding, each poised to make significant impacts. Let’s explore their stories:

African startups dashboard

Revolutionizing Aquaculture: AquaTrack’s AI-Driven Farm Management (Agritech, Nigeria)

Sisters Deborah and Busola Falope founded AquaTrack after confronting firsthand the challenges of fish farming in Port Harcourt, including low productivity, high mortality rates, limited financing, and volatile markets. Their solution is an AI-powered platform that streamlines aquaculture management while connecting farmers to financial services and direct market access.

Accessible via a web app, AquaTrack enables farmers to oversee pond conditions, record feeding and mortality rates, and monitor stock lifecycles comprehensively. A harvest module facilitates real-time sales tracking, calculating profits, expenses, and capital flow.

Complementing the platform is an AI assistant available both in-app and through WhatsApp, designed to support farmers with limited tech skills by answering queries and extracting data from uploaded receipts. AquaTrack also partners with undisclosed financial institutions to provide credit access and operates an online seafood marketplace that links producers directly to consumers, eliminating intermediaries.

Since its 2024 launch and revenue generation starting January 2025, AquaTrack has onboarded over 1,000 farmers, facilitated sales exceeding 30 tons of fish across Bayelsa, Aba, Enugu, and Oyo, and processed transactions worth ₦23 million (~$15,850). The startup has also built a pipeline of more than 160,000 prospective users.

Why AquaTrack stands out: Unlike competitors such as Kenya’s Aquarech, which focus mainly on e-commerce, AquaTrack offers an integrated platform combining farm management, operational analytics, market linkage, and financing. Upcoming features include a predictive analytics tool trained on real farm data to benchmark growth and forecast harvest outcomes. Plans are underway to pilot the platform in Kenya through a collaboration with a local agritech partner, expected to be announced in 2026.

Black Swan credit platform dashboard

Black Swan: Unlocking Credit for the Unbanked through Alternative Data (Embedded Finance, Tanzania)

Founded by Derick Kazimoto and Alex Mkwizu, Black Swan is a fintech infrastructure provider enabling financial institutions to extend credit by leveraging alternative data sources. Acting as an embedded finance middleware, it allows digital lenders to instantly verify customer information-such as bank statements and utility bills-with user consent, facilitating more accurate credit risk assessments.

Employing AI and machine learning, Black Swan evaluates creditworthiness for individuals lacking traditional collateral, supporting services like Buy Now, Pay Later and device financing. For instance, a customer seeking to finance an iPhone 17 Pro Max can upload bank statements, which Black Swan’s AI verifies alongside credit bureau checks to pre-approve loans swiftly.

Currently active in Tanzania, Black Swan is piloting operations in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Malawi. A notable innovation in development is the “credit SIM,” a portable credit identity linked to a user’s phone number, enabling credit histories to move seamlessly across banks, lenders, and borders. The company operates on a revenue-sharing model, earning fees based on credit model performance after accounting for defaults.

Why Black Swan is a game-changer: Despite the proliferation of digital lending platforms, Africa faces a $100 billion credit gap, with over 500 million adults lacking formal identification to access loans. Black Swan’s approach bypasses traditional lenders by making financing data portable and accessible across platforms. Unlike competitors such as Jumo and Kunda, which rely heavily on telecom data, Black Swan remains independent of telco operators, enabling operation in markets without open banking frameworks. The startup’s model was recently validated by winning the MEST Africa Challenge 2025.

ResearchGains platform interface

ResearchGains: Democratizing Data Collection for African Scholars (Data & Research, Nigeria)

Computer engineer Balogun Babaunde founded ResearchGains after encountering data integrity issues during his undergraduate research. The platform offers a digital infrastructure that enables research teams to collect, store, and analyze structured data efficiently. It connects researchers with verified respondents in real-time through an open data intelligence system.

Researchers can design qualitative (audio/video) or quantitative surveys targeting specific demographics using filters such as age, gender, location, employment, education, occupation, and ethnicity. To enhance inclusivity, the platform supports translations in nine languages, including Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Swahili, Zulu, Arabic, and Portuguese. Respondents earn redeemable points for survey participation.

Quality control is rigorous, employing National Identification Numbers (NIN) for identity verification, GPS tracking for location-based surveys, and response time analysis to detect fraudulent or rushed answers.

Pricing varies by package: the Student tier charges ₦200 (~$0.14) per respondent for up to 300 participants; Small Scale and Medium Scale packages cost ₦300 (~$0.21) and ₦250 (~$0.17) per respondent, accommodating up to 1,000 and 10,000 respondents respectively. ResearchGains claims access to a pool of 5 million respondents across diverse demographics.

Why ResearchGains matters: Africa contributes only 2% to global research output. By providing a platform with readily accessible African respondents and datasets, ResearchGains accelerates the continent’s research capacity. Compared to global tools like SurveyMonkey, which start at $35 per month, ResearchGains offers a cost-effective alternative tailored to African contexts, boasting over 400 local datasets to date.

Jxtgotfunded platform interface

Jxtgotfunded: Accelerating Startup Fundraising with AI-Driven Matching (Networking, Nigeria)

Co-founded by Ozurumba Obinna and Wosu Ogechi, Jxtgotfunded is an AI-powered marketplace designed to streamline the fundraising journey for African startups. The platform addresses the dual challenges of limited startup visibility and prolonged investor due diligence caused by trust deficits.

Startups register on the web app, submitting details about their team, location, funding stage, traction, sector, and pitch decks. Investors specify their investment preferences, including ticket size, sectors, locations, and prior investments. The platform’s machine learning algorithm generates compatibility scores, helping investors focus on aligned opportunities. Matched parties can communicate directly within the app to manage deal flow.

Additional features include pitch deck analytics, document templates (e.g., NDAs), and market intelligence dashboards tracking funding trends. Upcoming AI agents will summarize financial documents, analyze projections, prepare due diligence reports, and generate sector-specific insights.

Jxtgotfunded currently operates on a success-fee basis, charging 2% to 5% commissions on closed deals, supplemented by partnerships with incubators and ecosystem data services. A subscription model unlocking premium features is planned. Since its MVP launch in October 2024, the platform has attracted approximately 500 startups.

Why Jxtgotfunded is noteworthy: In H1 2025, African startups raised $1.42 billion across 243 deals. Jxtgotfunded aims to expedite this process by reducing investor bias through AI matchmaking. Unlike platforms such as F6S, which use cohort models, or Startup List Africa, which serves as a directory, Jxtgotfunded offers a culturally attuned, trust-building approach tailored to Africa’s unique investment landscape, differentiating it from global counterparts like AngelList.

Maa: AI-Enhanced Maternal Care Tailored for African Mothers (Healthtech, Ghana)

Dr. Abena Jim-Annan and Aseda Addai-Deseh founded Maa to address critical gaps in maternal healthcare across Africa, including fragmented care continuity, emotional isolation, medication safety concerns, and limited access to specialists.

Maa is an AI-powered digital companion that supports mothers throughout the maternal journey. It allows users to store and synchronize clinical records-such as ultrasounds, lab results, and vaccination histories-and document pregnancy milestones, including scans and newborn photos, which the AI compiles into a digital keepsake for future sharing.

The app tracks vital signs to detect trends like rising blood pressure and features an intelligent medication management system that monitors side effects and sends dosage reminders. For example, if a user reports nausea after taking folic acid, the app alerts healthcare providers in real-time for timely intervention.

Additional functionalities include integrated telemedicine, multilingual support, community and peer mentorship groups organized by location or interest, and a family sync feature enabling partners to access health updates remotely.

Maa plans a freemium subscription starting at $2 per month, with revenue streams from corporate wellness packages, telemedicine fees, and hospital partnerships. Currently in testing, Maa has over 500 users on its waitlist and targets a Q2 2026 launch.

Why Maa is essential: In sub-Saharan Africa, only 64% of births are attended by skilled professionals, with maternal mortality rates at 536 per 100,000 live births. Maa’s culturally contextualized, data-driven approach aims to bridge this gap, offering tailored maternal care solutions grounded in African realities, unlike global maternal apps that may provide inaccessible recommendations.

Mi-Fam agricultural assistant dashboard

Mi-Fam: Empowering Sierra Leonean Farmers with AI Insights (Agritech, Sierra Leone)

Inspired by his mother’s farming challenges, N’fa Bolokada Umar created Mi-Fam to replace guesswork with data-driven decision-making for smallholder farmers in Sierra Leone. The platform combines AI diagnostics, weather forecasting, and a marketplace to enhance agricultural productivity and profitability.

Farmers can diagnose crop diseases and soil conditions by simply photographing plants; the AI analyzes images instantly without storing them, offering tailored advice such as removing infected leaves or applying specific fertilizers. Mi-Fam also predicts rainfall and temperature trends, recommending optimal planting and harvesting times.

To accommodate non-literate users, results are delivered via text or voice notes in local languages like Krio, Mende, and Temne. The integrated marketplace enables farmers to sell produce and trade equipment directly with buyers, eliminating costly intermediaries.

Currently in MVP testing, Mi-Fam offers premium subscriptions priced between SLE120 (~$5.22) and SLE250 (~$10.87), unlocking features like unlimited crop listings and an AI chatbot providing agricultural advice in local dialects.

Why Mi-Fam is impactful: Agriculture accounts for over 50% of Sierra Leone’s GDP. Mi-Fam addresses the sector’s reliance on intuition by delivering localized AI-powered tools that improve crop management and market access. Its focus on Sierra Leone-specific data ensures recommendations are highly relevant, positioning it as a transformative solution for smallholder farmers.

YarnGPT AI voice platform

YarnGPT: Bringing Nigerian Accents to AI Voice Technology (AI, Nigeria)

Launched in 2025 by Saheed Ayanniyi, YarnGPT addresses the lack of Nigerian language and accent representation in existing text-to-speech AI models. Ayanniyi developed the platform by compiling datasets from Nigerian films to capture authentic speech patterns and intonations.

YarnGPT offers tools for video translation and text-to-speech synthesis, enabling creators to dub content into Nigerian languages such as Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa within minutes. The platform also features a URL input tool that converts web content into audio narrated in Nigerian voices.

Developers can integrate YarnGPT’s API to embed Nigerian-accented or indigenous language speech into third-party applications. Additional features include a dialogue generator that produces multi-voice conversations with customizable pauses and speaker roles.

Why YarnGPT is pioneering: By focusing on local linguistic nuances, YarnGPT fills a critical gap in global AI voice technology, offering a homegrown alternative to Western-centric dubbing tools. This empowers African content creators to engage audiences in native languages, enhancing cultural relevance and accessibility.

That concludes our feature for today. Our next issue will be published on December 12, 2025. Know an innovative startup we should highlight? Submit your nomination here.

Simple tricks to make your MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile data last longer

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 6, 2025

Contents Overview

My journey to conserving mobile data began abruptly when my freshly purchased data bundle vanished before midday. Despite buying a new plan the previous evening, I woke up to find my apps offline and my data balance depleted. This unexpected loss prompted me to investigate the root causes behind rapid data consumption.

After scrutinizing my phone settings, analyzing app behaviors, and exploring online communities for hidden USSD codes and tips, I realized that data depletion is rarely accidental. It’s influenced by your device configuration, usage patterns, and the network provider’s policies.

This guide will equip you with practical strategies to extend your data bundle’s lifespan and maximize value across Nigeria’s leading networks: MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile (now T2).

Effective Ways to Prevent Unnecessary Data Drain

Leverage Your Smartphone’s Native Data Management Features

Modern smartphones come equipped with built-in tools designed to minimize background data usage, which is a common culprit in rapid data depletion.

  • Android Devices: Activate Data Saver by navigating to Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver. This restricts apps from consuming data in the background.
  • iOS Devices: Enable Low Data Mode via Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Data Mode. This setting curtails background data usage across apps.

For essential apps like messaging or banking, you can whitelist them to bypass these restrictions, ensuring uninterrupted service. Additionally, enabling Battery Saver mode often reduces background activity, indirectly conserving data while extending battery life.

Manage App Data Consumption Proactively

Apps frequently consume more data than anticipated, especially when running background processes or auto-refreshing content.

  • Review your phone’s Data Usage section to identify high-consuming apps.
  • Disable background data access for non-essential apps to prevent them from using data when not actively in use.
  • Limit push notifications from apps that frequently update, as these can trigger data use.
  • Configure app stores (Google Play Store, Apple App Store) to update apps exclusively over Wi-Fi.
  • Adjust messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram to avoid automatic downloads of media files on mobile data.

Optimize Browsing and Streaming Habits

  • Prefer downloading videos, music, and podcasts over Wi-Fi for offline consumption instead of streaming live.
  • Lower streaming quality settings within apps to reduce data usage.
  • Use data-compressing browsers such as Opera Mini or enable Chrome’s Lite Mode to shrink webpage sizes.
  • Download offline maps for navigation to avoid continuous data consumption.

Implementing these adjustments can significantly extend your data bundle’s usability.

Maximizing Data Efficiency on MTN

Utilize MTN’s Official Monitoring Tools and Codes

MTN offers multiple channels to track and manage your data usage effectively:

  • Use the myMTN NG app or dial *312# to purchase data.
  • Check your balance with *323#.
  • Engage with MTN’s Zigi chatbot on WhatsApp or Telegram for real-time assistance.

MTN also recommends using “Lite” versions of popular apps and disabling Background App Refresh to minimize background data consumption.

Discover Hidden and Personalized Bundles for Greater Savings

Beyond standard plans, MTN offers exclusive bundles accessible through special USSD codes often shared within online communities. These personalized offers provide superior data-to-cost ratios.

For instance, popular codes include:

  • 4GB for ₦1,000 monthly via *312*65*3#
  • 2GB for ₦200 weekly via *312*65*2#

Availability depends on your location and eligibility, so regularly checking the MTN app’s “Offers” section and experimenting with community-shared codes can yield the best deals.

Choose Bundles Tailored to Your Usage Patterns

If social media dominates your data consumption, MTN’s focused plans like the Ayoba Weekly Plan (40MB for ₦50) or the All Social Daily Plan (200MB for ₦100) can help preserve your main data balance.

Additionally, MTN’s monthly plans often include generous night data allowances (e.g., 2GB for overnight use). Scheduling heavy downloads and streaming during these off-peak hours maximizes your bundle’s value.

Smart Data Saving Techniques for Airtel Users

Navigate Airtel’s Standard Plans Wisely

Dial *312# to access Airtel’s daily, weekly, and monthly data plans. Airtel’s standout feature is its Smart Data Plans, which allocate data into segmented buckets for specific uses, such as YouTube streaming or Spotify music.

For example, a Smart Data Plan might include:

  • 1GB general data
  • 1GB YouTube Night data
  • 200MB Spotify data

This segmentation helps prevent your main data from being drained by high-bandwidth activities. Selecting plans aligned with your usage habits-like video streaming or music listening-ensures better cost efficiency.

Optimizing Data Usage on Glo Nigeria

Implement Glo’s Recommended Data Controls

Glo encourages users to set strict data limits and monitor consumption closely. You can set a data cap by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage > Billing Cycle on your device. Enabling data alerts will notify you as you approach your limit, preventing unexpected overages.

Purchase data via *312#, check balances with *323# or by texting INFO to 127. Glo advises disabling automatic updates and multimedia auto-downloads to conserve data.

Capitalize on Glo’s Bulk Bundles and Night Bonuses

Buying larger data bundles offers better value per megabyte. For example, a 30-day plan providing 10.5GB for ₦3,000 is more cost-effective than smaller daily or weekly plans.

Many Glo plans include night bonuses valid from midnight to 5 AM. For instance, the ₦2,000 monthly plan offers 3.25GB of daytime data plus a 3GB night bonus. Scheduling heavy downloads and updates during these hours leverages bonus data without extra cost.

Users who consistently utilize night bonuses and bulk purchases enjoy the most reliable savings on Glo.

Data Conservation Strategies for 9mobile (T2) Subscribers

Maintain Rigorous Device-Level Data Management

Unlike larger networks, 9mobile has fewer widely circulated hidden codes. Therefore, your best savings come from diligent use of your phone’s data-saving features:

  • Keep Data Saver enabled.
  • Restrict background app synchronization.
  • Regularly monitor app data consumption to identify and curb excessive usage.

Utilize 9mobile’s Night Data and Mega Bundles

Many 9mobile monthly plans allocate a significant portion of data for night-time use, which can drastically reduce costs if used wisely.

  • Night Data Example: A plan offering 6.2GB total, with 4GB reserved for night use, costs ₦1,176. This allows you to schedule large downloads and updates during off-peak hours.
  • Mega Packs: Accessed via *452#, these bundles provide bulk data at reduced rates, such as 10GB for ₦5,000 with 30-day validity.

Purchase data with *312# and check balances using *323#. Since 9mobile emphasizes structured plans over hidden codes, your savings are more predictable and less affected by regional restrictions.

Daniel Etim Effiong’s The Herd Holds a Mirror to Nigeria’s Kidnapping Crisis

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 5, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

A Prayer for Safe Journeys: The Reality of Nigeria’s Dangerous Roads

In many Nigerian households, a common morning prayer echoes a heartfelt plea: “K’a ma rin nigbati ebi ba n pa ona,” meaning, “May we not walk when the road is hungry.” This expression, laden with caution and hope, resonates deeply, especially in a country where traveling can be fraught with peril.

On the day Derin and Fola exchanged vows, the road was not just hungry-it was ravenous. The priest’s blessing, “Now, you are ready to step into a new chapter filled with joy and hope,” seemed almost ironic against the backdrop of looming danger.

When Joy Meets Danger: The Story Behind “The Herd”

Had the couple known what awaited them, perhaps they would have sought more than blessings-maybe a prayer for protection on the treacherous journey ahead. Unfortunately, their vulnerability is shared by countless Nigerians who traverse roads where safety is a fragile illusion, despite the country’s deep religiosity and frequent prayers over vehicles.

Kidnappings have become a grim reality, with victims often caught in fates ranging from ransom demands to tragic ends. This harsh truth inspired filmmaker Daniel Etim Effiong to craft a narrative that reflects these dangers, born from his own weariness with Nollywood and a desire to tell stories that matter. “You tell the stories you want to tell, the ones you feel you deserve,” Effiong explains. “That’s what I set out to do.”

Escalating Kidnappings: A National Crisis

Released amid a surge in kidnappings, especially in Nigeria’s north-central states, The Herd captures a nation gripped by fear. According to recent United Nations data, over 400 people, predominantly schoolchildren, were abducted in just two weeks across Niger, Kebbi, Kwara, and Borno states. This alarming trend has transformed everyday activities-travel, education, worship-into acts of courage.

The Plot: A Harrowing Journey of Love and Survival

The Herd centers on a man traveling to Ekiti for his best friend’s wedding who is kidnapped, and the extraordinary lengths his wife goes to rescue him. This storyline is not just fiction; it echoes Effiong’s personal history. His father was imprisoned during Nigeria’s military era, and his mother’s relentless efforts to secure his release ended tragically when she died traveling to the prison.

Effiong’s childhood memories of road trips with his father, once a source of joy and connection, now contrast sharply with the dangers those same roads pose to his own children.

Exploring Complex Themes: Violence, Identity, and Social Divides

More than a thriller, The Herd delves into the complexities of violence and moral ambiguity. The film portrays a bride widowed in an instant, friends forced to confront loyalty and sanity, and families caught in surreal yet painfully familiar circumstances. It also highlights Nigeria’s social contradictions-bandits who pause for prayer, pastors involved in organ trafficking, and moments of cultural prejudice, such as a character mocking another’s inability to speak Igbo.

These juxtapositions underscore the paradoxes of a society clinging to rituals and identities amid systemic failure.

Social Hierarchies and Prejudices Amid Crisis

Beyond the forest’s violence, the film exposes subtler forms of cruelty. Adamma (Linda Ejiofor Suleiman) struggles to raise a ₦50 million ransom, only to face discrimination from her in-laws due to her Osu caste status. Her desperate offer to end her marriage to gain their support reveals how entrenched social hierarchies continue to shape lives, even in moments of extreme distress.

Audience Reception and Critical Acclaim

The Herd has resonated powerfully with viewers, topping Netflix charts in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. Audiences have lauded its unflinching portrayal of contemporary Nigerian realities:

“I just finished watching ‘The Herd’ on Netflix, that’s not just a movie-it is someone’s reality as we speak.” – Deelulu (@yappadoodledee)

“Just finished seeing THE HERD movie. It was a good and sad watch as it depicts the insecurities we’re facing in Nigeria – kidnapping by terrorists.” – Chioma Genia (@eugeeyy)

“As dreadful as the scenes are in the movie, The Herd, we all need to understand that this is our lived reality, every single one of us. Don’t be fooled by your gated estates and your tinted glasses. We are in deep trouble.” – MO’BELIEVE (@mobelieve_)

“The Herd is one of the most engaging films I’ve seen this year. Everyone acted their hats off, especially the guys and girl that played bandits.” – Ebuka Obi-Uchendu (@Ebuka)

Authenticity Rooted in Research and Personal Experience

The film’s gripping realism stems from meticulous research. Screenwriter Lani Aisida incorporated survivor testimonies, reports on kidnappings across Nigeria and the Sahel, analyses of armed groups’ movements, and even social media posts from bandits. Director Effiong supplemented this with insights from security officials and reflections on his own family’s history.

Controversy and Dialogue on Ethnic Representation

Despite its acclaim, The Herd faced backlash for allegedly stereotyping an ethnic group. Bashir Ahmad, former special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital Communications, criticized the film for portraying Fulani herdsmen as kidnappers, warning of the dangers of ethnic profiling in a region already ravaged by insecurity. Effiong counters this, emphasizing the film’s nuanced depiction.

He clarifies that Fulani herdsmen are often victims themselves, with their cattle stolen by bandits who then use the herdsmen’s identity as a cover. The film aims not to indict any tribe or religion but to expose Nigeria’s deep divisions and the intolerance that permeates various communities.

Unity Amid Diversity: The Meaning Behind “The Herd”

Effiong’s own diverse background-born in the North, raised between Benin and Lagos, with parents from Cross River and Edo, educated in the East, and married to a Yoruba woman-shapes his inclusive worldview. He describes his mindset as “detribalised.”

The film’s title, The Herd, is symbolic, representing a collective ideal of unity. “We are one people and should have one voice,” Effiong asserts. “With one voice, we must address our differences instead of dividing ourselves into ‘them’ and ‘us.’ Yes, we are different, but we are one nation.”

Interestingly, after watching the full film, Bashir Ahmad revised his opinion, praising it as “truly an incredible one.”

Emotional Impact and Responsible Storytelling

The film’s intense emotional scenes-Derin’s anguish over Fola’s mutilated body, the brutal violence inflicted by kidnappers like Annas (Ibrahim Abubakar Fulani), Adamma’s frantic efforts to raise ransom money, and the weary security forces-resonate deeply with audiences. Each moment feels lived rather than imagined.

Effiong stresses that the violence is portrayed with care, avoiding gratuitousness. “We were hard-hitting with the facts but careful not to be too graphic,” he explains. “The film needed to be accessible without traumatizing viewers. Storytelling must be honest and responsible, balancing truth with sensitivity.”

A Journey of Persistence and Purpose

Though it took three years to complete, the film’s release coincides with a renewed wave of kidnappings, underscoring its urgency. For Effiong, this timing validates the risks he took as a first-time feature director confronting a national trauma.

His path to filmmaking was unconventional-initially studying engineering, then shifting to theatre arts, working in media, studying film in South Africa, and gradually building his career through acting and directing commercials. “I had to crawl before I could run and fly,” he reflects.

A Call to Action: Beyond Reflection to Engagement

Effiong hopes The Herd will do more than mark a personal milestone. He wants it to awaken Nigerians to the interconnectedness of their struggles and inspire collective action. “It’s not enough to say, ‘This is happening in the North, too bad,'” he insists. “We must get involved, wake up to reality, and fight for the soul of Nigeria.”

“How Depression Saved My Life” – Chude Jideonwo Talks Faith, Therapy and the Healing Power of Storytelling in New Book

A Decade of Triumph and Turmoil: Chude Jideonwo’s Journey Through Mental Health

In his compelling new memoir, How Depression Saved My Life, acclaimed media entrepreneur and storyteller Chude Jideonwo opens up about the darkest chapter of his existence-the harrowing day he nearly ended his life on Lagos’s Eko Bridge. Published by Narrative Landscape Press, known for works by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Femi Otedola, this memoir chronicles a transformative ten-year period from 2014 to 2024. It captures Jideonwo’s evolution from orchestrating presidential campaigns to founding WithChude, a platform dedicated to healing and purpose-driven living.

Living with Hidden Struggles: The Untold Story of Tourette’s and Depression

“For years, I endured a persistent twitch on my right side that worsened with any physical discomfort,” Jideonwo reveals. “Managing that alongside my battle with depression felt overwhelming.”

After enduring years of incorrect diagnoses, medical professionals finally identified his symptoms as Tourette’s syndrome-a neurological condition he had unknowingly carried since childhood. The memoir’s poignant chapter titled ‘Suicidal’ recounts the moment when the crushing weight of depression, adverse medication effects, and despair converged.

“One day, while driving from Lagos Island to the Mainland across the Eko Bridge, the heaviness became unbearable. I slowed down, drifting into the right lane, as if I no longer wished to move forward. I gazed at the vast Atlantic Ocean beside me, and a strange calm washed over me.”

“I contemplated what it might feel like to drive off the bridge-whether for a fleeting moment or forever-to escape the unbearable pain. A chilling serenity followed; fear vanished, clarity emerged, and I knew what I had to do.” This pivotal decision to persevere marked a profound turning point in his life.

From Despair to Empowerment: Building Platforms for Healing and Growth

Jideonwo’s memoir intertwines his personal battles with depression and Tourette’s syndrome with reflections on faith, therapy, philosophy, and the restorative power of storytelling. His near-suicidal experience became the catalyst for creating initiatives like WithChude, WithChude Live, Joy Inc., and the Fourthmainland Creator Fund-platforms designed to transform pain into empowerment.

“Following the highs of the Buhari campaign in 2015 and the Akufo-Addo campaign in 2016, I was diagnosed with clinical depression and Tourette’s syndrome. I faced unimaginable pain, contemplated suicide, resigned as CEO of RED, considered relocating to America, then ultimately returned to Nigeria. Three years later, I emerged renewed with WithChude,” Jideonwo shared in an Instagram announcement.

“If you’re navigating a difficult or confusing period and unsure how to endure it, this book offers not only survival strategies but also a roadmap to transform adversity into joy. It’s a candid, practical guide on converting life’s greatest challenges into profound happiness.”

A Rare Narrative on Mental Health, Ambition, and Faith in Nigeria

With unflinching honesty and eloquent prose, How Depression Saved My Life sheds light on a seldom-discussed intersection in Nigerian society: mental illness entwined with ambition and spirituality. The memoir serves as both a confession and a guide, narrating a journey from breakdown to wholeness.

The book is currently available in bookstores across Nigeria via NarrativeLandscape.com and internationally on Amazon.

About Chude Jideonwo: A Voice for African Stories of Resilience

Chude Jideonwo is the creator and host of WithChude, one of Africa’s most widely viewed talk shows, and WithChudeLive, the continent’s largest talk concert. A lawyer, filmmaker, and media entrepreneur, he co-founded and formerly led African media companies RED | For Africa, Joy Inc., and YNaija. His expertise spans 21 African countries, where he has advised presidents and election campaigns in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

Recognized as a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, CNBC Young Business Leader of the Year, Archbishop Desmond Tutu Fellow, Yale World Fellow, and Creative-In-Residence at the London School of Economics, Jideonwo launched WithChude in 2020. The podcast and multi-platform talk show features intimate conversations with African leaders and celebrities, amassing millions of views on YouTube and syndication across three Pan-African networks. It has become one of Africa’s largest repositories of stories centered on healing, resilience, and personal growth.

In 2025, he introduced the Fourthmainland Creator Fund, pledging a personal investment of $500,000 to empower African creators and shape the future of independent media on the continent.

His work has been featured in prestigious outlets such as The New York Times, The Guardian, BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, The Huffington Post, and The Financial Times. His latest memoir, How Depression Saved My Life, is published by Narrative Landscape.

What Does It Mean to Be a Father Today? | Watch MENtality With Ebuka Episode 5

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 5, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Fatherhood discussion

The Evolving Role of Fatherhood in Modern Families

Fatherhood remains one of the most challenging and vital roles within any family structure. Being a father today means more than just providing financial support; it involves active engagement with both children and partners. The traditional image of the father as the sole breadwinner has shifted dramatically over recent decades. In contemporary households, responsibilities are often shared between spouses, yet the father’s influence and involvement continue to be crucial topics of discussion.

How Childhood Experiences Shape Parenting Styles

People’s upbringing varies widely, with fathers who may be strict disciplinarians, easygoing companions, consistently present, or sometimes absent. These diverse paternal models profoundly impact how individuals approach their own parenting. For example, some men strive to be more emotionally available to their children because they experienced absence in their own childhoods, while others may unconsciously mirror the parenting methods they grew up with. Since the home environment is the primary learning ground before formal education begins, children often internalize both positive and negative traits from their fathers, which can influence their future relationships and parenting approaches.

Insights from the MENtality With Ebuka Podcast: Redefining Fatherhood

In the fifth installment of the popular podcast MENtality With Ebuka, hosts Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Banky W engage in a candid conversation with guests Hermes Iyele and Timi Dakolo about the contemporary meaning of fatherhood. Ebuka reflects on his own upbringing, describing a father who balanced conservatism with freedom, allowing him to make his own choices-such as participating in Big Brother Naija in 2006-without opposition.

Ebuka’s experience represents one model of fatherhood where autonomy is encouraged within a framework of traditional expectations. In contrast, Hermes Iyele shares his unique perspective as someone raised solely by his father, who fulfilled both parental roles. Hermes emphasizes that fatherhood transcends mere physical presence, stating, “If being present is only about being physically there, then a man is at a disadvantage.” This highlights the emotional and psychological dimensions of fatherhood that are often overlooked.

Broadening the Conversation: Diverse Perspectives on Fatherhood

What makes this episode of MENtality particularly compelling is its inclusive guest lineup. While the discussion centers on fatherhood, the panel includes three fathers and one polyamorous individual, enriching the dialogue with varied viewpoints. For instance, when Ebuka mentions, “I have some of the best conversations with my kids,” Timi Dakolo responds thoughtfully, “If you don’t talk to your children, someone else will.” This exchange underscores the importance of intentional communication in parenting.

Banky W further expands on this by asserting that fatherhood “is not just biological, it’s intentional.” This perspective challenges conventional definitions and encourages men to actively choose how they engage with their children, regardless of biology.

Reflecting on Fatherhood: Questions Every Dad Should Ask

This episode invites fathers and soon-to-be fathers to contemplate critical questions: How will your approach to raising children differ from your own father’s? What does it truly mean to be a father in today’s world, where emotional support and presence are as vital as financial provision?

For those interested in exploring these themes further, the full conversation is available to watch below.
