AFCON 2025: Five high-profile Super Eagles players Eric Chelle will remove from his 55-man list

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 5, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is approaching rapidly, with all competing nations, including Nigeria’s Super Eagles, having announced their preliminary squads.

On Tuesday, head coach Eric Chelle unveiled a 55-man provisional roster featuring a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talents. This list is expected to be whittled down to 28 players shortly, with several positions still fiercely contested.

As is often the case, squad selections spark debate among fans and analysts alike, with coaching staff’s preferences sometimes diverging from public opinion. Coaches tend to favor players they have previously worked with and trust, which can influence final decisions.

Before the official 28-man roster is announced, Soccernet.ng highlights five notable players included in Chelle’s provisional list who are unlikely to make the final cut for AFCON 2025.

1. Paul Onuachu: Prolific Yet Overlooked

Paul Onuachu has been a standout striker in the Turkish Süper Lig, netting 11 goals and providing one assist this season for Trabzonspor. He currently leads the league’s scoring charts and is Nigeria’s top European goalscorer in 2025.

Despite his impressive form, Chelle appears unconvinced, opting instead for Tolu Arokodare, who has struggled for game time at Wolves. Given Chelle’s current preferences, Onuachu’s exclusion from the final squad seems likely.

2. Francis Uzoho: Experienced Keeper Facing Competition

With 35 caps, Francis Uzoho is a familiar figure between the sticks for Nigeria. However, he has not featured for the Super Eagles since January 2024 and currently serves as the backup goalkeeper at Omonia, limiting his match fitness.

Given that only three goalkeepers are selected for the tournament and with Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye firmly established as first and second choices, Uzoho’s chances of making the final squad are slim.

3. Felix Agu: Injury Setback Hampers Prospects

Felix Agu’s inclusion in the provisional squad is surprising given his ongoing recovery from an injury sustained in early October. The 26-year-old defender has been sidelined for several months and is unlikely to regain full fitness before the tournament.

His absence from competitive action makes it improbable that he will be ready to contribute in Morocco.

4. Taiwo Awoniyi: Struggling for Form and Fitness

Emmanuel Dennis and Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest

Taiwo Awoniyi has endured a challenging season, hampered by injuries and limited playing time at Nottingham Forest. He has appeared in only four matches this season, none of which saw him complete the full 90 minutes, and his goal-scoring form has dipped significantly.

Given the fierce competition for attacking roles, it would be unexpected for Chelle to include Awoniyi in the final squad.

5. Victor Boniface: Battling Injuries and Inconsistency

Victor Boniface, also from Werder Bremen, is another unexpected name on the provisional list. Like Awoniyi, injuries have limited his impact this season. Although he has contributed three assists, he has yet to find the back of the net for his club in 2025.

With other forwards in better form, Boniface’s inclusion in the final AFCON squad would come as a surprise.

William Troost-Ekong Announces Retirement from Nigeria National Team

After a distinguished international career, William Troost-Ekong has officially stepped down from representing Nigeria, as confirmed by Soccernet.ng.

A Decade of Dedication and Leadership

The 31-year-old defender’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious ten-year tenure with the Super Eagles, beginning under the guidance of the late Stephen Keshi and culminating in his role as team captain. Troost-Ekong shared the news on Wednesday through a heartfelt message on his X (formerly Twitter) account, putting to rest weeks of speculation about his international future, particularly regarding his potential participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite being named in the provisional 55-man squad by coach Eric Chelle.

Reflecting on a Storied Career

In his detailed farewell letter, Troost-Ekong reminisced about his debut and expressed deep gratitude to Stephen Keshi for the opportunity that transformed his life in 2015.

“Every time I donned that iconic jersey and stepped onto the pitch, I recalled that defining moment,” he wrote. “Accumulating 93 senior caps, competing in five major tournaments, earning three medals, and setting records – I have truly lived my dream.”

Achievements and Highlights

Throughout his international career, Troost-Ekong earned a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and featured in three AFCON tournaments. Notably, he captained the team to a silver medal at the 2023 AFCON, where he was honored as Player of the Tournament after scoring in the final.

“HONOURED. GRATEFUL. FOREVER A SUPER EAGLE
Playing for Nigeria has been the highest honor of my life. Though this chapter closes, my support remains unwavering.
Here’s to new beginnings.”
– William Troost-Ekong (M.O.N) (@WTroostEkong) December 4, 2025

Setting Records and Inspiring Unity

Troost-Ekong holds the distinction of being the highest-scoring defender in AFCON history. He described leading Nigeria in the 2023 tournament as a profound experience that deepened his understanding of national pride and resilience.

“That competition revealed the true spirit of being Nigerian: in hardship, we unite, persevere, and emerge stronger.”

Retirement Ends Speculation Over AFCON 2025 Participation

His retirement confirms earlier reports suggesting he would not feature in the upcoming 2025 AFCON in Morocco, despite his inclusion in the preliminary squad. Sources indicated Troost-Ekong’s focus had shifted towards securing his club career with Al Kholood in Saudi Arabia. This development also sparks discussions about the future captaincy, with players like Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Osimhen emerging as potential leaders.

Passing the Leadership Baton

Troost-Ekong expressed contentment in knowing he gave his all to the national team and emphasized the importance of empowering the next generation of Nigerian footballers.

“The moment has arrived to hand over the responsibility, the opportunity, and the captain’s armband. I have always viewed this iconic jersey as a privilege on loan. Now, it’s time for the emerging talents to carve their own legacy.”

Continuing Commitment Beyond the Pitch

Although stepping away from international play, Troost-Ekong assured fans that his connection to Nigeria remains strong, with ongoing involvement in community initiatives and unwavering passion for the Super Eagles.

“This is not a final farewell. My dedication to Nigerian communities endures, as does my love and enthusiasm for this team.”

With 93 caps, multiple medals, and a legacy of leadership, the Super Eagles now face the future without one of their most emblematic figures, as Troost-Ekong closes a remarkable chapter in Nigerian football history.

“They never called me” – Fikayo Tomori on why he never played for the Super Eagles of Nigeria

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 5, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Fikayo Tomori’s International Allegiance: Why England Over Nigeria?

Fikayo Tomori, currently a key defender for AC Milan and the England national team, has opened up about his decision to represent England instead of Nigeria, the country of his heritage. Despite being eligible to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian parents, Tomori’s journey took a different path, as reported by Soccernet.ng.

Early Life and Football Development

Born in Calgary, Canada, to Nigerian parents, Tomori relocated to England at just one year old. His footballing foundation was laid at Chelsea’s renowned Cobham Academy, where he developed into a promising talent. He broke into Chelsea’s first team during the 2019/2020 season under then-manager Frank Lampard. After a loan spell at AC Milan in 2020, Tomori secured a permanent transfer to the Italian giants in 2021, where he has since flourished.

International Career: From Canada to England

Tomori’s international journey began with Canada’s youth teams, reflecting his birthplace. However, at 18, he was approached by England’s youth setup, which prompted a switch. Unlike some of his contemporaries of Nigerian descent-such as Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman-who chose to represent Nigeria, Tomori committed to England. To date, he has earned five caps for the Three Lions and is optimistic about securing a place in England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup under manager Thomas Tuchel.

“I was initially playing for Canada’s youth teams, but within a few months, the England Academy manager contacted me about switching allegiances,” Tomori shared on the Filthy Fellas Podcast.

“When England called during the next international break, I knew I had to accept. I wondered if I declined, would I ever get another chance? We won the U-20 FIFA World Cup with a strong squad including Solanke, Lookman, Calvert-Lewin, Lewis Cook, and Dean Henderson. It felt familiar, like Chelsea, with friends like Tammy Abraham around.”

“I initially played for Canada because I wasn’t getting called up by England. If Nigeria had reached out, I would have considered it. But they never did, so I never had to make that choice.”

“Would I have switched to Nigeria later? I’m not sure. At the time, I was playing regularly for Chelsea and believed I could break into the England senior team. Nigeria has great players like Ola Aina, Mola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi, so it wasn’t a bad option. But since they never officially contacted me, I never had to decide.”

The Nigerian Roots Shaping Tomori’s Mindset

Although Tomori never donned the Nigerian jersey, his upbringing was deeply influenced by Nigerian culture. Raised in a traditional African household, his father emphasized education before football, instilling discipline and focus.

“Unlike many parents today who push their kids into football early, my dad was indifferent at first. He wanted me to concentrate on school. Around age 15, he started encouraging me to watch certain players and listen to coaches. Being a midfielder then, he often mentioned Michael Essien and George Weah, reflecting his old-school football values,” Tomori explained.

Tomori’s most recent appearance for England was in their 2-0 victory over Malta in November 2023, a testament to his ongoing role in the national team setup.

Sadiq Umar’s first goal in eight months draws praise from Real Sociedad manager

Sadiq Umar’s Resurgence Sparks Praise from Real Sociedad’s Coach

After a prolonged goal drought, Nigerian international and Real Sociedad forward Umar Sadiq has earned commendations from head coach Sergio Francisco following the team’s 2-0 victory over Reus in the Copa del Rey, according to Soccernet.ng.

Before this match at Estadio Camp Nou Municipal, the 28-year-old striker had been largely sidelined, starting only once this season and making four substitute appearances. His previous goal dated back to May, when he scored for Valencia in a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano.

Against Reus, Sadiq came off the bench and quickly made an impact by assisting Mikel Goti just four minutes into the second half. He then confidently converted a penalty in stoppage time (93rd minute), sealing the win for Sociedad.

Coach Sergio Francisco Highlights Sadiq’s Impact

Despite being the third option in the attacking lineup for the Basque club this season, Sadiq’s perseverance and recent performance have impressed his manager.

“Sadiq is unique. Every time he steps onto the pitch lately, he contributes significantly,” the 46-year-old coach told AS.

“Today, he brought physicality and the ability to challenge defenders. He’s a player who wins aerial duels, flicks the ball on, constantly threatens the opposition, and when we attack down the wings, he can be decisive. He also earned the penalty that gave us peace of mind,” Francisco added.

Prospects for Sadiq in Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 Squad

Two days ago, Nigeria’s Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle unveiled a 55-man provisional roster for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, with Sadiq included among the hopefuls.

Although Sadiq’s recent form could boost his chances of making the final 28-man squad, he remains behind several forwards in the pecking order.

Coach Chelle has favored players like Victor Osimhen, Tolu Arokodare, Cyriel Dessers, and recently Akor Adams, granting them more playing time since his appointment.

Veterans such as Paul Onuachu, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Taiwo Awoniyi also have more international experience, which could influence selection decisions over Sadiq.

Ultimately, Sadiq’s limited minutes at club level remain a hurdle. To secure a spot in the AFCON 2025 squad, he must sustain his current momentum in the coming weeks.

Naira Firms to ₦1,460/$ at Parallel Market

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 5, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Naira Shows Signs of Recovery Amid Market Fluctuations

On Tuesday, the Nigerian naira experienced a modest appreciation, trading at ₦1,460 per US dollar in the parallel market, improving from ₦1,470 recorded on Monday. This positive shift reflects a strengthening local currency against the dollar in informal trading channels.

Performance in Official Foreign Exchange Markets

Similarly, the naira gained ground in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), closing at ₦1,447 per dollar, a slight improvement from the previous day’s ₦1,450. According to recent figures released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the naira appreciated by ₦3 at the official exchange window, signaling increased stability in formal currency trading.

Narrowing Disparity Between Exchange Rates

The gap between the parallel market rate and the official NFEM rate has contracted to ₦13 per dollar, down from ₦20 per dollar on Monday. This reduction in the spread suggests a gradual alignment between the informal and formal currency markets, which could enhance investor confidence and reduce arbitrage opportunities.

Context and Implications

Experts note that the naira’s recent gains come amid ongoing efforts by the CBN to stabilize the currency through targeted interventions and improved foreign exchange liquidity. For instance, in the first quarter of 2025, the CBN injected over $1 billion into the FX market to support the naira. This strategy aims to curb inflationary pressures and foster economic growth by ensuring smoother access to foreign currency for businesses and consumers alike.

Looking Ahead

While the current appreciation is encouraging, analysts caution that sustained stability will depend on broader economic reforms, including diversification of Nigeria’s export base and enhanced foreign investment inflows. The narrowing exchange rate gap is a positive indicator, but continuous monitoring of market dynamics remains essential to prevent volatility.

10 African Countries With Political and Economic Stability in 2025

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 5, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

The political and economic dynamics across Africa are continually evolving, yet certain nations consistently demonstrate resilience against the continent’s widespread challenges.

The 2025 Africa Country Instability Risk Index (ACIRI) offers an insightful evaluation of sub-Saharan African countries, assessing their susceptibility to political unrest, economic shocks, and security threats. This index uniquely excludes North African countries, Mauritania, and Western Sahara due to data limitations and their closer ties to the Arab-Maghreb region.

Covering 48 nations, the ACIRI evaluates each based on governance quality, economic robustness, geopolitical influences, and historical vulnerabilities, providing a comprehensive overview of stability across the region.

Understanding the Instability Metrics

ACIRI employs a 100-point scale where higher values indicate greater instability. Countries are categorized from “Safe” to “Red Watch,” reflecting their risk levels. The index also reveals regional trends:

  • Southern Africa continues to be the most stable sub-region.
  • East Africa has seen a notable increase in instability, driven by political upheaval, economic difficulties, and currency depreciation.
  • Central Africa remains challenged by ongoing conflicts and governance weaknesses.
