Rev Ezekiel Dachomo addressing displaced Christians

Hope Emerges for Nigeria’s Christian Victims Amid Rising Violence

Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo, a respected pastor and advocate for human rights from Plateau State, has delivered an encouraging message to Christian populations displaced by escalating violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. His optimism follows a recent visit by a delegation of U.S. lawmakers to Benue State, a hotspot of ongoing ethnic and religious conflict.

Global Attention Intensifies on Middle Belt Turmoil

As the head of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) and a vigilant observer of the region’s turmoil, Dachomo stressed that the heightened international scrutiny could represent a crucial turning point for communities enduring persistent violence. The involvement of U.S. congressional representatives underscores a growing global commitment to addressing the crisis.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Reflecting on his advocacy efforts, Dachomo revealed the challenges he has encountered, including censorship and intimidation. “My efforts to raise awareness have led to social media bans and criticism,” he admitted. “Yet, the truth remains unstoppable. Our faith in Christ continues to inspire hope, and support is on the horizon.”

U.S. Congressional Visit Reveals Disturbing Realities

Congressman Riley M. Moore from West Virginia, who spearheaded the U.S. delegation, shared insights from their fact-finding mission on X (formerly Twitter). The group met with influential local leaders such as Catholic Bishops Wilfred Anagbe and Stephen Dugu, the traditional ruler Tor Tiv, and numerous internally displaced persons (IDPs) who recounted harrowing experiences of violence.

Moore described hearing “heartbreaking accounts,” including that of a mother who lost five children in attacks. He characterized the violence as a “brutal genocidal campaign” allegedly orchestrated by extremist elements within Fulani groups. “The scenes I witnessed are unlike anything I have ever seen and will stay with me forever,” he remarked.

Proposed Framework for U.S.-Nigeria Partnership

In light of these findings, Congressman Moore is drafting a detailed report for the U.S. President and senior officials. This report will recommend collaborative measures with Nigerian authorities to protect vulnerable communities and dismantle the terrorist networks fueling the unrest.

Heightened International Awareness Brings Renewed Optimism

Rev. Dachomo emphasized that Moore’s public disclosures and media engagements in the United States mark a significant breakthrough in global acknowledgment of the crisis. According to recent humanitarian data, over 2 million individuals have been displaced in Nigeria’s Middle Belt as of mid-2024. This surge in international focus is vital to breaking the cycle of violence and paving the way for sustainable peace.

2027: Labour Party Declares ‘No Automatic Ticket’ for Peter Obi

Labour Party Emphasizes Merit-Based Candidacy for 2027 Elections

The Labour Party (LP) has officially stated that no candidate, including the prominent former presidential hopeful Peter Obi, will be granted an automatic nomination for the upcoming 2027 electoral contests. This policy applies across all elective positions, from the presidency to governorships and legislative seats.

Commitment to Transparent Primaries

In a move to reinforce internal democracy, the party insists that all aspirants must secure their candidacies through competitive and transparent primary elections. This approach aligns with the party’s dedication to fairness and inclusivity in its candidate selection process.

Clarifying Peter Obi’s Political Status

Speculation has been mounting regarding Peter Obi’s political intentions and whether he will rejoin the Labour Party for the 2027 race. However, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, highlighted that Obi has maintained a considerable distance from the party’s leadership for nearly a year. Ifoh emphasized that only Obi himself can provide clarity on his political direction, as the party refrains from making assumptions or statements on his behalf.

Authority of the National Convention

Obiora Ifoh underscored that the ultimate decision on who represents the Labour Party in any election rests solely with the national convention. The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has firmly resolved that no exceptions will be made, regardless of a candidate’s popularity or previous contributions to the party’s cause.

Recent Party Activities and Electoral Compliance

During the latest NEC meeting, the focus was primarily on organizing and launching congresses and primaries across the country, with no discussions centered on Peter Obi’s candidacy. The party reported that the congresses conducted so far have been successful, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) overseeing the processes to ensure adherence to electoral regulations.

Looking Ahead: Upholding Democratic Values

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the Labour Party’s stance reflects a broader trend among political organizations emphasizing internal democracy and meritocracy. This approach aims to foster greater trust among voters and strengthen the party’s credibility in a competitive political landscape.

Recent statistics indicate that parties enforcing transparent primaries tend to experience higher voter engagement and candidate legitimacy, a factor the Labour Party appears keen to capitalize on as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.

“Anti-corruption fight has become political witch-hunt” – Atiku blasts EFCC

Atiku Abubakar Condemns Politicization of Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Drive

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced strong concerns over the direction of Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign, asserting that it has devolved into a politically motivated persecution rather than a genuine fight against graft.

EFCC’s Credibility at Risk Amid Partisan Allegations

In a statement released by his media team in Abuja on Thursday, Atiku cautioned that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and similar agencies risk eroding public confidence unless they decisively eliminate political bias from their operations. He emphasized that the commission’s impartiality is crucial to maintaining its legitimacy.

Controversial Arrests Signal Departure from Core Mandate

Highlighting the recent detention of Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Atiku argued that such actions illustrate the EFCC’s shift away from its foundational mission. Originally established to uphold justice and combat corruption fairly, the agency now appears to be leveraging its authority to advance narrow political objectives.

Selective Prosecution Undermines Anti-Graft Efforts

Atiku accused the EFCC of targeting opposition figures disproportionately, citing Malami and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as examples of individuals subjected to what he described as orchestrated crackdowns. This selective enforcement, he contended, damages the commission’s reputation and betrays the principles upon which it was founded.

EFCC’s Alleged Alignment with the Ruling Party

The former vice president suggested that the EFCC has effectively become an aggressive arm of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly intensifying its activities following the rise of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a political challenger. He noted that corruption allegations against allies of the APC are often overlooked, pointing out that several former governors with pending corruption cases have been appointed to ministerial and ambassadorial positions by President Bola Tinubu.

Political Loyalty Trumps Integrity in Anti-Corruption Appointments

Atiku expressed disappointment that the EFCC did not oppose the appointment of individuals with unresolved corruption accusations, implying that political allegiance has taken precedence over ethical standards. He remarked, “If Malami had been a member of the APC, the EFCC would likely have ignored his alleged offenses, no matter how severe.”

EFCC as a Tool for Political Intimidation

According to Atiku, the EFCC has transformed into an instrument used to intimidate opposition politicians and coerce them into joining the ruling party. He described the commission as operating like a “political rottweiler,” deployed to pressure politicians, with corruption charges conveniently disappearing once they align with the APC.

Preserving Institutional Independence is Vital for Genuine Anti-Corruption

Atiku stressed that no credible democracy can effectively combat corruption by compromising the autonomy of its oversight bodies. He urged the EFCC leadership to extricate the agency from political interference and restore its integrity to regain public trust.

The High Stakes of Maintaining EFCC’s Integrity

Concluding his remarks, Atiku warned that the EFCC’s reputation is too valuable to be sacrificed for partisan gains. He called on all stakeholders to ensure that the commission remains a neutral and effective institution dedicated to eradicating corruption in Nigeria.

Contextual Insight

Recent data from Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (2023) ranks Nigeria 150th out of 180 countries, underscoring the urgent need for credible and unbiased anti-corruption measures. The politicization of agencies like the EFCC threatens to exacerbate public cynicism and hinder progress in governance reforms.

Oyo Assembly Shifts ₦2bn from Overhead to Capital Expenditure, Passes ₦892b 2026 Budget

Oyo State Approves ₦892 Billion Budget for 2026 with Strategic Fund Reallocation

The Oyo State House of Assembly has officially enacted the 2026 Appropriation Bill, sanctioning a comprehensive budget totaling ₦892,085,074,480.79. This milestone follows a detailed review and endorsement by the House Committee on Finance, Appropriation, and State Economic Planning.

Emphasis on Fiscal Prudence and Infrastructure Growth

Honorable Olasunkanmi Babalola, who serves as the Deputy Leader of the House and chairs the Finance Committee, hailed the budget approval as a landmark achievement. He underscored the Assembly’s dedication to maintaining fiscal discipline while prioritizing infrastructure enhancement and efficient governance.

“Our approach involved a meticulous evaluation across all ministries, departments, and agencies, enabling us to identify opportunities for optimizing resource allocation. This led to a deliberate transfer of ₦2 billion from overhead costs to capital projects,” Hon. Babalola explained.

Rebalancing the Budget: From Overhead to Development

This strategic adjustment reduced the overhead expenditure from ₦389 billion to ₦387 billion, simultaneously boosting capital expenditure to over ₦504 billion. The shift reflects a clear commitment to funding long-term development initiatives and enhancing the state’s infrastructure landscape.

Ensuring Accountability and Community Impact

Hon. Babalola reassured residents that the 2026 budget aligns with the aspirations of Oyo State’s populace and is designed to deliver tangible benefits. “As elected representatives, we are resolute in translating this budget into meaningful progress across all constituencies. Our House committees will conduct rigorous oversight of all ministries, departments, and agencies to guarantee transparency and responsible spending,” he stated.

Timely Budget Passage to Facilitate Early Implementation

The Deputy Leader highlighted that passing the budget before the year’s end has become a standard practice in Oyo State, aimed at enabling the government to commence operations promptly from January 1. “Given that the national fiscal year runs from January through December, any delay beyond January hampers effective execution. Our objective is to have a budget that is operational from day one,” he added.

Addressing Environmental Concerns Through Budgetary Support

Responding to Governor Seyi Makinde’s recent remarks on the challenges of indiscriminate waste disposal, Hon. Babalola confirmed that the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources is a significant beneficiary in the 2026 budget. “Via the Environment Committee, we will prioritize sustainable waste management and environmental protection initiatives. Our mandate is to ensure the budget is transparent and responsive to the needs of our citizens,” he affirmed.

Looking Ahead: A Budget for Sustainable Progress

With this budget, Oyo State is poised to enhance its infrastructural framework, promote environmental sustainability, and uphold fiscal responsibility. The Assembly’s proactive stance sets a precedent for effective governance and community-focused development in the coming year.

Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic Eruwa Celebrates 2025 Christmas Carol with Spiritual and Institutional Triumphs

Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, was alive with festive spirit and heartfelt worship during its 2025 Annual Christmas Carol event, held under the theme “The Son of God” (Luke 1:35). The occasion seamlessly combined deep spiritual reflection with the celebration of significant institutional accomplishments.

Origins and Purpose of the Annual Carol

Professor Abiola Jesulowo, Chair of the Organising Committee, shared that the annual carol tradition was initiated by the late Professor Abiodun Adebowale Ojo, former Chairman of the Governing Council. Professor Ojo envisioned the event as a platform to foster unity, spiritual renewal, and moral upliftment within the polytechnic community.

Messages of Unity and Peace from Leadership

In his inspiring goodwill address, Professor Kazeem Adebiyi, Chairman of the Governing Council, encouraged the AOPE family to embrace the core values of love, joy, and togetherness. He emphasized that Christmas is a time to honor peace and celebrate the shared bonds of humanity.

Institutional Progress Highlighted by Acting Rector

The ceremony’s pivotal moment was the opening speech by the Acting Rector, Dr. Gbade Akinteye, who led attendees in a solemn minute of silence to honor the late Professor Ojo and other departed staff members. Dr. Akinteye proudly recounted the administration’s dedication to enhancing staff welfare, revealing unprecedented milestones in the institution’s history.

He announced a substantial increase in staff salaries alongside the full clearance of all outstanding deductions-an achievement that was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.

“These milestones,” Dr. Akinteye remarked, “are truly worthy of celebration, especially during this joyous season.”

Scriptural Reflections and Uplifting Musical Performances

The carol service featured profound readings from key biblical texts including Genesis, Isaiah, Luke, Matthew, and John, narrating God’s redemptive plan culminating in the birth of Jesus Christ. The atmosphere was electrified as the choir performed timeless Christmas hymns, inspiring moments of dance, praise, and communal joy throughout the hall.

Powerful Exhortation on the Divinity of Christ

Rev’d Dr. Michael Oyatowo (JP) of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Osoogun, Lanlate, delivered a compelling sermon centered on the theme “Jesus as the Son of God.” Addressing longstanding theological discussions about Christ’s divine nature, he used vivid analogies to illustrate Jesus’ authority and enduring significance for humanity.

Dr. Oyatowo highlighted six profound implications of Jesus’ identity as the Son of God: His divine sovereignty, His relatable human nature, His mission to redeem humanity from sin, the miraculous nature of His birth, and the assurance of eternal life for believers. He urged the congregation to recognize that “the name we attribute to Jesus shapes His role in our lives,” encouraging daily proclamation of Christ’s presence beyond the Christmas season.

Closing Remarks and Attendance

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Professor Abiola Jesulowo, who acknowledged the spiritual enrichment and historic significance of the celebration for the institution.

The gathering was graced by the presence of the Governing Council Chairman, Management Team, Heads of Departments, Directors, faculty and staff members, religious leaders, students, and other distinguished guests.

Commercial Flights Return to Ibadan As NCAA Issues Provisional Permit After Major Upgrades

Scheduled Commercial Flights Restart at Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially authorized the resumption of scheduled commercial flight operations at Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLA), located in Ibadan, Oyo State. This milestone follows significant infrastructural enhancements aimed at elevating the airport’s status and capacity.

Provisional Operational Permit Granted by NCAA

In a formal communication dated December 16, 2025, addressed to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the NCAA confirmed the issuance of a provisional interim operational permit. This permit enables the airport to commence regular scheduled flights, marking a pivotal development in the region’s aviation sector.

Infrastructure Upgrades Driving the Approval

The Oyo State Government spearheaded extensive modernization projects at the airport, transforming it closer to international standards. Key improvements include the extension and widening of the runway to accommodate larger aircraft, enhanced airfield lighting systems for improved safety during night operations, and the construction of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage facility to support increased flight activities. Additionally, a new Protocol Lounge was established to provide enhanced comfort and services for passengers and dignitaries.

Safety and Operational Compliance Underpinning the Permit

The NCAA’s decision followed a comprehensive review of the airport’s upgraded safety-critical infrastructure, operational protocols, and risk mitigation strategies. This assessment incorporated updated data and reports submitted by FAAN, ensuring that all regulatory requirements and safety standards are met before the commencement of scheduled flights.

Previously, the NCAA had authorized non-scheduled flight operations at the airport, but this new permit expands the scope to include regular commercial services. The authority emphasized that the provisional permit is contingent upon strict adherence to a detailed work plan, including the full activation of emergency response mechanisms to safeguard passengers and operations.

Looking Ahead: Enhancing Regional Connectivity

This development is expected to boost economic activities and improve connectivity within Nigeria and beyond. With the airport’s upgraded facilities, airlines can now consider Ibadan as a viable hub for both domestic and potential international routes. According to recent aviation industry data, regional airports that undergo similar upgrades have seen passenger traffic increase by up to 30% within the first year of resuming scheduled services.

As the airport transitions into this new phase, stakeholders remain committed to maintaining high safety standards and operational excellence, ensuring that Ibadan’s gateway continues to serve as a catalyst for growth in the southwestern region of Nigeria.
