Umahi Affirms Southeast’s Enhanced National Integration Under Tinubu’s Leadership
Engr. David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State governor, has asserted that the demand for a separate Biafran state is no longer warranted. He attributes this shift to the unprecedented inclusion of the South-East region in Nigeria’s broader development framework under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Revitalization of Federal Infrastructure Projects in the South-East
During a recent inspection of ongoing federal infrastructure initiatives in the South-East, Umahi highlighted the significant reduction in feelings of marginalization that once fueled separatist sentiments. He emphasized that the Tinubu government has prioritized the region through substantial investments, particularly in road construction and rehabilitation.
“Historically, our people felt sidelined, which spurred calls for Biafra. However, today, the South-East is firmly integrated into Nigeria’s national agenda,” Umahi stated. He expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s commitment, noting that the region is now “comfortable and satisfied” with the current administration’s approach.
Major Road Projects Signaling Progress and Longevity
Umahi detailed several key projects that had been dormant for over a decade but have since been reactivated. Among these is a critical road section managed by MTN under RCC, with a projected completion date in February and a budget of ₦202 billion. Additionally, a 72-kilometer stretch overseen by SKCC, costing ₦150 billion, has already received 30% of its funding.
He underscored the federal government’s focus on constructing durable roads designed to last between 50 and 100 years, a strategic shift from previous short-term projects. “The president’s vision is to build infrastructure that will serve generations,” Umahi remarked.
Highlighting Key Infrastructure Milestones in the Region
Among the flagship projects Umahi mentioned are the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, the Owerri-Onitsha expressway, and section 2B of the Second Niger Bridge, collectively valued at ₦176 billion. He pointed out the completion of the Artisan Bridge in Enugu and the ongoing construction of the largest flyover in the South-East at Depot Junction, Eke-Obinagu.
Further investments include the Enugu-Abakaliki road project, budgeted at ₦172 billion, and a 123-kilometer legacy road stretching from Ndibe Beach in Ebonyi State to the Benue border, with a ₦424 billion valuation. These developments, Umahi argued, eliminate any grounds for renewed agitation for Biafra.
Strategic Political Engagement Over Emotional Appeals
Umahi urged the South-East to seek political influence through calculated strategies rather than emotional rhetoric. “Reclaiming our rightful place requires pragmatic actions, not divisive statements,” he emphasized.
He cited his own support for President Tinubu and the recent defection of the Enugu State governor to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as examples of strategic political alignment aimed at advancing the region’s interests.
Commending Regional Leadership and Looking Ahead
Recognizing the efforts of fellow governors, particularly his Ebonyi State successor, Umahi praised the culture of diligent work without the need for grandiose ceremonies. “Our leaders are focused on delivering results quietly and effectively,” he noted.
Concluding on an optimistic note, Umahi described the current period as a pivotal moment for the South-East. “Despite opposition, the time has come for our people to reclaim their rightful status. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership is the catalyst for this reintegration,” he affirmed.
