Seychelles leads the way in regional pooled procurement of essential medicines

African SIDS Pooled Procurement Initiative Honored with 2025 SIDS Partnership Award

Victoria, Seychelles – The African Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Pooled Procurement Initiative has been recognized with the prestigious 2025 SIDS Partnership Award in the economic category. The accolade was presented on 12 December at the Global Multi-Stakeholder SIDS Partnership Dialogue held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This award celebrates a groundbreaking regional collaboration among African SIDS-including Cabo Verde, Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritius, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Seychelles-that has successfully enhanced access to affordable, quality-assured medicines by leveraging collective bargaining power and ensuring consistent supply chains.

Origins and Political Commitment: The Seychelles Declaration

The initiative traces its roots back to a 2017 summit of health ministers from African SIDS convened in Seychelles. During this meeting, the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region introduced the pooled procurement model as a strategic response to challenges such as small market sizes, inflated medicine prices, and limited negotiation leverage faced by these island nations. The gathering culminated in the Seychelles Declaration, a unified pledge by participating countries to establish a shared procurement system for essential medicines. This political consensus, formalized through a regional agreement, laid the groundwork for a collaborative platform aimed at reducing pharmaceutical costs, stabilizing supply chains, and bolstering health system resilience across the region.

Leadership and Milestones: Seychelles’ Pivotal Role

Since its inception, Seychelles has played a central leadership role in the initiative. Initially, the country supported the technical development necessary to operationalize the pooled procurement mechanism. In 2024, Seychelles hosted the African SIDS ministerial meeting that finalized long-term supplier contracts and endorsed the transfer of the initiative’s secretariat to Mauritius, marking a significant step toward institutional sustainability.

That same year, Seychelles received its inaugural pharmaceutical shipment through the pooled procurement system-a historic achievement for African SIDS. The country anticipates achieving cost reductions of at least 50% over the next five years across 67 essential medicine formulations, based on price comparisons with data from 2021-2022. The establishment of long-term framework agreements with two competitively selected suppliers has enhanced supply security and minimized the risk of stock shortages. Furthermore, Seychelles continues to provide technical guidance and advocacy, ensuring smooth secretariat operations and encouraging wider regional participation.

WHO’s Integral Support and Expansion of Membership

Throughout the initiative’s development, WHO has been instrumental by offering continuous technical and financial assistance. Acting as the interim secretariat, WHO coordinated procurement planning, facilitated training programs, and engaged stakeholders to ensure effective implementation. The organization also played a key role in expanding the initiative’s membership by integrating Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau alongside the original six African SIDS members.

Collective Impact on Medicine Access and Health Outcomes

This collaborative approach has empowered countries with traditionally limited market influence to negotiate more favorable prices and improve the availability of vital medicines. This is particularly significant for managing noncommunicable diseases, which represent a growing health burden in the region. For instance, cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Seychelles and other African SIDS, underscoring the importance of reliable access to affordable treatments.

Voices from the Field: Commitment to Regional Solidarity

Dr. Rex Mpazanje, WHO Representative for Seychelles, remarked, “This award symbolizes the unwavering resolve of African SIDS to convert persistent challenges into shared opportunities. Through pooled procurement, nations like Seychelles are not only broadening access to affordable, quality-assured medicines but also exemplifying the strength of regional unity in advancing health equity for all.”

Future Directions: Scaling Up and Sustaining Success

Looking forward, Seychelles and its regional partners are preparing for the upcoming tender cycle, with plans to expand the portfolio of medicines and diversify supplier options. Lessons learned from the pilot phase will inform strategies to enhance operational efficiency and maximize value for money. Maintaining regular procurement cycles and deepening regional cooperation will be critical priorities ahead of the Health Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for March 2026 in São Tomé and Príncipe. With Mauritius set to host the permanent secretariat and Seychelles continuing to provide technical and advocacy leadership, the initiative is well-positioned to drive sustained improvements in access to essential medicines across African SIDS.

African Small Island States win Global UN Award for transforming access to essential medicines

Transforming Medicine Access in Africa’s Small Island Developing States

In the island nations of Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles, Cabo Verde, Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe-collectively identified as Africa’s Small Island Developing States (SIDS)-a significant evolution in the availability of essential medicines is underway.

Global Recognition for a Groundbreaking Regional Initiative

This transformative progress recently garnered international recognition when African SIDS were honored with the 2025 UN SIDS Partnership Award in the Economic category at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The accolade celebrates their innovative Pooled Procurement Initiative, a collaborative effort supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) that is revolutionizing access to vital medications across these island nations.

Uniting Strengths to Overcome Unique Healthcare Challenges

Small island communities often face distinct obstacles in healthcare delivery, including geographic isolation, elevated shipping expenses, and limited bargaining power with pharmaceutical suppliers. The award symbolizes more than institutional achievement; it marks a meaningful enhancement in healthcare accessibility and affordability for everyday citizens.

The Power of Collective Purchasing

The Pooled Procurement Initiative, the sole operational mechanism of its kind within the WHO African Region, brings together six African SIDS alongside Madagascar to jointly negotiate and acquire essential medicines. By aggregating their demand, these countries have unlocked purchasing power previously unattainable for individual small island economies.

Economic and Operational Impact

The UN panel praised the initiative as “a trailblazing African collaboration showcasing measurable economic benefits, robust governance, and transformative regional unity.” Since its inception, the mechanism has yielded impressive, independently validated outcomes. The inaugural international tender is projected to reduce factory prices by an average of 56% across 47 essential medicine formulations, with savings ranging from 3% to an extraordinary 94%. Early orders have already generated substantial financial benefits, including approximately 26% cost reductions in Seychelles and 13% in Mauritius.

Streamlining Procurement and Supplier Engagement

Beyond cost savings, the initiative has standardized procurement processes by creating a harmonized list of 67 priority medicines. This unified approach attracted bids from 37 global suppliers, culminating in the selection of six suppliers representing five different countries, thereby enhancing competition and supply reliability.

Long-Term Financial Projections and Efficiency Gains

A 2022 evaluation estimates that the pooled procurement mechanism could save around US$34 million over five years. These projections exclude additional efficiencies such as reduced tendering expenses, shorter delivery times, lower freight costs, and decreased administrative burdens related to supplier management.

Ensuring Sustainability Through Local Leadership

To cement the initiative’s longevity, the Secretariat’s management is transitioning from WHO to the Government of Mauritius, reinforcing regional ownership and accountability. This handover represents one of the most impactful health system advancements for African island nations in recent years.

Collaborative Support Driving Capacity Building

Key contributions from the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Partnership, the European Union, and other stakeholders have bolstered procurement infrastructure, enhanced technical expertise, and facilitated the Secretariat’s transition. These efforts exemplify how political will combined with collective action can dramatically improve health outcomes and economic efficiency in small island contexts.

A Model of Regional Solidarity and Scalable Solutions

The recognition at the UN highlights the remarkable achievements of African SIDS, proving that even the smallest health systems can implement impactful, scalable solutions through cooperation and shared vision.

About the UN SIDS Partnership Awards

The UN SIDS Partnership Awards honor outstanding collaborations that advance sustainable development within Small Island Developing States. Recipients are chosen based on innovation, demonstrable impact, transparency, and alignment with the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS).

Legendary German actor Udo Kier dies at 81

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 20, 2025

Renowned German actor Udo Kier passes away at 81 after an illustrious career spanning over 275 films in Hollywood and Europe

The world of cinema mourns the loss of a legendary figure.

Udo Kier, the distinguished German actor celebrated for his piercing gaze and a prolific career filled with memorable antagonist roles, has died at 81. His longtime partner, Delbert McBride, confirmed his passing on Sunday morning at a hospital in Palm Springs. The cause of death remains undisclosed, as reported by The Guardian.

Throughout his extensive career, Kier featured in more than 275 productions, collaborating with acclaimed directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Gus Van Sant, and Lars von Trier. His versatile talents spanned films, television, music videos, and even video games, frequently portraying chilling, intense, or villainous characters. Whether embodying vampires or Nazi officers, Kier’s unmistakable presence left a lasting impression.

From Wartime Beginnings to the Silver Screen

Born in Germany in 1944 amidst the turmoil of World War II, Kier’s entry into the world was marked by drama-his birth hospital was bombed mere hours after he was born, and he was rescued from the rubble. Raised in the hardships of post-war Germany, he worked in a factory during his teenage years before destiny steered him toward acting. Discovered in London, his breakthrough came in 1970 with the cult horror film Mark of the Devil.

Serendipitous Encounters Shaping a Career

Kier’s career trajectory was shaped by fortuitous meetings. A chance seating next to director Paul Morrissey on a flight led to starring roles in the cult classics Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) and Blood for Dracula (1974). His close association with Fassbinder resulted in multiple significant roles, including in Lola, The Stationmaster’s Wife, and the acclaimed television series Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Later, his enduring collaboration with Lars von Trier brought him parts in critically acclaimed films such as Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Melancholia, and Nymphomaniac. Their bond extended beyond work, with Kier serving as godfather to von Trier’s son.

Hollywood and Beyond: Expanding Horizons

The 1990s marked Kier’s successful entry into Hollywood, where he appeared in popular films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Johnny Mnemonic, Armageddon, End of Days, and Blade. His unique charisma caught the attention of pop icon Madonna, who featured him in her provocative book Sex and several music videos, inspired by his role in My Own Private Idaho.

Continued Passion in Later Years

Even in his later years, Kier remained a dynamic presence on screen, with notable performances in films like Brawl in Cell Block 99, Dragged Across Concrete, and the 2022 comedy Swan Song, where he portrayed a flamboyant retired hairdresser staging a final, dramatic return.

Reflecting on his vast filmography, Kier once humorously remarked:

“Out of 200 films, about 100 are poor, 50 are enjoyable with a glass of wine, and 50 are genuinely good.”

Legacy and Upcoming Projects

His last completed film, The Secret Agent, features him as a Jewish Holocaust survivor, a poignant role given his own early life experiences. Additionally, Kier is set to appear posthumously in OD, an upcoming horror video game developed by Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele, blending his legacy with cutting-edge interactive storytelling.

Nigerian Army troops detain a notorious kidnap kingpin in Taraba

Major Arrest in Taraba: Nigerian Army Captures Infamous Kidnap Leader

In a significant development in the fight against kidnapping in Taraba State, Nigerian Army forces have successfully apprehended a prominent kidnap kingpin in the Wukari Local Government Area. This arrest marks a critical step in curbing the surge of violent crimes plaguing Southern Taraba.

Details of the Arrest and Suspect’s Profile

Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, revealed in a statement dated Monday, November 24, 2025, that the detained individual, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa, is closely linked to another high-profile kidnapper, Umar Musa Geyi. Geyi was previously captured on November 22, 2025, during ransom negotiations involving a ₦20 million demand with the family of an abducted victim.

Criminal Network and Regional Impact

Investigations indicate that Bawa and Geyi are integral members of a larger criminal network responsible for a series of kidnappings, violent assaults, and orchestrated illegal activities throughout Southern Taraba. This syndicate has been a major source of insecurity, disrupting the lives of countless residents.

Operation Zafin Wuta: Strategic Military Efforts

The arrests are part of the ongoing Operation Zafin Wuta, a military clearance initiative aimed at eradicating criminal elements terrorizing communities in the region. The 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), executed a meticulously planned operation on November 23, 2025, which led to Bawa’s capture as he attempted to flee Wukari.

Command Leadership Praises Troops’ Dedication

Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, lauded the troops for their unwavering professionalism and tactical precision. He emphasized that the arrest of Bawa underscores the effectiveness of Operation Zafin Wuta in dismantling criminal networks and reinstating peace in affected communities.

“This achievement highlights our commitment to relentless clearance operations. We will not allow any criminal to evade justice as long as we maintain this level of operational intensity,” Brigadier General Uwa stated.

Ongoing Investigations and Community Involvement

With Bawa now in custody and undergoing thorough interrogation, the Nigerian Army is intensifying efforts to unravel the full extent of the syndicate’s operations. Security forces are urging local residents to stay vigilant and provide credible intelligence that could aid in further dismantling these criminal networks.

Recent statistics from the Nigerian Security Tracker indicate a 15% decline in kidnapping incidents in Taraba since the launch of Operation Zafin Wuta earlier this year, reflecting the positive impact of sustained military interventions.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Peace in Southern Taraba

The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its mission to restore lasting security across Southern Taraba. The success in apprehending key figures like Alhaji Abubakar Bawa and Umar Musa Geyi sends a strong message to criminal elements that their reign of terror is coming to an end.

Olivia Yacé Steps Down from Miss Universe Africa & Oceania Title, Citing Personal Convictions

Olivia Yacé Miss Universe Africa

Olivia Yacé, the distinguished Ivorian beauty who secured the position of fourth runner-up and earned the Miss Universe Africa & Oceania crown at the 2025 Miss Universe pageant, has officially relinquished her continental title. Her decision stems from a desire to uphold her personal ethics and integrity.

Official Announcement from Miss Côte d’Ivoire Committee

On Monday, November 24, the Miss Côte d’Ivoire Committee (COMICI) publicly declared Yacé’s withdrawal from all responsibilities and titles associated with the Miss Universe organization. The committee emphasized that this step was taken for personal reasons and confirmed that the Miss Universe organization has been duly notified of her resignation.

COMICI’s statement on Facebook read: “As the official license holder for Miss Universe in Côte d’Ivoire, we regret to announce that Olivia Yacé, Miss Côte d’Ivoire 2021, has stepped down from her mandates following the 74th Miss Universe International pageant held on November 21, 2025, at Bangkok’s Impact Arena.”

Returning the Title and Sash

Effective immediately, Yacé has surrendered her Miss Universe Africa & Oceania title. She will formally return her sash to the organization to ensure transparency and mutual acknowledgment of this decision.

Yacé’s Personal Statement: Staying True to Core Values

In a heartfelt message shared on her official Facebook page, Yacé explained her choice to step down as a commitment to the principles that guide her life and career. Reflecting on her journey, she stated, “Representing Côte d’Ivoire at Miss Universe 2025 was a testament to my resilience and determination in the face of challenges. The competition pushed me to my limits and tested my readiness to overcome obstacles.”

However, she underscored that continuing in her role would require compromising her foundational beliefs. “To move forward, I must remain anchored in respect, dignity, excellence, and equal opportunity,” she affirmed.

A Purpose-Driven Departure

Yacé described her resignation as a deliberate and values-based decision, stepping away not only from the Miss Universe Africa & Oceania title but also from any future involvement with the Miss Universe Committee. She expressed that while her tenure as a beauty queen has been marked by discipline and meaningful purpose, she no longer feels the title allows her to fully express her potential.

She elaborated, “My mission has always been to inspire younger generations. As I shared onstage, I aspire to be a role model for young girls, encouraging them to confidently enter spaces where they might feel excluded and to embrace their identities with pride.”

“By stepping aside, I can dedicate myself wholeheartedly to championing the values I cherish,” Yacé added.

Empowering Black and African Diaspora Communities

Yacé extended a powerful message of encouragement to Black and African-descendant communities worldwide, urging them to persist in breaking barriers and amplifying their voices. “I call on Black, African, Caribbean, American, and Afro-descendant communities to continue entering spaces where they are often unexpected, paving the way for those who follow,” she said.

“Never let others define or limit your potential. Our presence is vital, and our voices deserve to be heard,” she emphasized.

Closing Remarks and Well Wishes

Yacé congratulated the newly crowned Miss Universe and sent her best wishes to Miss Universe Jamaica for a speedy recovery. She concluded her statement with gratitude and optimism: “I am deeply thankful for the support and experiences that have shaped me. I now embark on a new chapter with unwavering resolve to uplift and inspire. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this extraordinary journey. IT’S TIME FOR AFRICA.”

Public Reaction and Context

Yacé’s eloquence during the question-and-answer segment won admiration from pageant enthusiasts globally, with many expressing that she deserved a higher placement, and some even suggesting she should have been crowned Miss Universe 2025.

Her resignation follows one of the most contentious Miss Universe pageants in recent memory, which was overshadowed by public controversies including allegations of biased judging, onstage errors, and a widely publicized confrontation involving the eventual winner, Miss Mexico Fátima Bosch.

Five cabals operating within Tinubu’s administration – Lawyer reveals

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 20, 2025

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Legal Analyst Highlights Multiple Power Centers Within Tinubu’s Presidency

Charles Omole, a prominent lawyer and author known for his work From Soldier to Statesman – The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, has revealed the existence of at least five influential factions operating within President Bola Tinubu’s administration. His insights were shared during a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Complex Networks Surrounding the Presidency

Omole emphasized that while it is natural for any president to have close advisors, the absence of robust institutional checks can lead to what he terms “state capture” or “presidential capture.” According to his assessment, Tinubu’s government currently hosts multiple competing groups, each wielding significant influence over decision-making processes.

“From my analysis, there are no fewer than five distinct cabals embedded within the presidency,” Omole stated. “Interestingly, one of these factions is reportedly led directly by the president himself.”

Breakdown of the Key Factions

The first and perhaps most prominent group is centered around Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President. This faction includes notable figures such as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who collectively form a powerful inner circle.

Another significant bloc is associated with Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, comprising individuals who have benefited from his influence in securing government roles. Additionally, the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, commands her own group, further diversifying the power landscape within the administration.

Historical Context: Parallels with Buhari’s Tenure

Omole’s commentary comes shortly after the launch of his book in Abuja, where he also reflected on the governance style of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He revealed that during Buhari’s administration, similar cabal dynamics were at play, with certain factions manipulating information flow to the president.

“Buhari was an avid reader of newspapers, but reports suggest that some cabals curated special editions tailored to influence his perceptions,” Omole explained. This tactic underscores the ongoing challenges of ensuring transparent and accountable governance in Nigeria.

Implications for Governance and Accountability

The identification of these five cabals within Tinubu’s government raises critical questions about the concentration of power and the potential impact on policy implementation. Experts warn that without effective institutional frameworks, such factionalism could hinder cohesive governance and fuel internal conflicts.

As Nigeria navigates its complex political terrain in 2024, understanding these internal dynamics is essential for stakeholders aiming to promote transparency and democratic resilience.

Constitutional Fraud – Nigerians React as Rep Dasuki Accuses Govt of Altering New Tax Laws

Nigerian National Assembly

Controversy Erupts Over Alleged Tampering with Tax Legislation

On Wednesday, Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, ignited widespread public concern by accusing the government of modifying the tax laws slated for implementation. His claims have stirred significant debate among Nigerians nationwide.

Discrepancies Between Passed and Published Tax Laws

In a widely circulated video on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Hon. Dasuki highlighted inconsistencies between the tax bill approved by the National Assembly and the version officially published in the government gazette. He emphasized that these differences were deliberate alterations rather than mere typographical mistakes.

Constitutional Implications and Calls for Accountability

Dasuki argued that such unauthorized changes constitute a violation of Nigeria’s Constitution, undermining the legislative process. He stated, “Mr Speaker, honourable colleagues, the document we passed on this floor is not the same as the one gazetted. I cast my vote based on the original text, yet what is now public is entirely different.”

He further urged the House to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves, warning against overlooking what he described as a constitutional breach.

Speaker Promises Thorough Investigation

Responding to the allegations, Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas assured the assembly members that a comprehensive inquiry would be launched to ascertain the facts surrounding the purported amendments.

Public and Expert Reactions Highlight Severity of Allegations

The controversy has sparked a wave of reactions across social media and civil society. Many Nigerians expressed outrage, with some legal experts suggesting that if the claims are substantiated, the offense could warrant impeachment proceedings.

Voices from Social Media and Legal Circles

On X, a user named OurFaveOnlineDoc criticized the presidency, stating, “The National Assembly has been completely undermined by the presidency. This represents a new low in our nation’s governance.”

Human rights attorney Inibehe Effiong echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that such an act, if proven, amounts to an impeachable violation of constitutional law.

Similarly, commentator Obiasogu David remarked, “Should these allegations hold true, the government has engaged in outright constitutional fraud.”

Awaiting Official Response from the Presidency

As of the latest updates, the Nigerian Presidency has not issued any statement addressing the accusations.

Context: The New Tax Law and Its Implementation Timeline

According to Politics Nigeria, the tax legislation in question was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2024. The law is scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2025, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s fiscal policy framework.

Looking Ahead

With the implementation date approaching, the integrity of the tax law’s content is critical for public trust and economic stability. The ongoing investigation by the National Assembly will be pivotal in clarifying the situation and ensuring adherence to constitutional procedures.

Nigeria is Ruled by Unqualified Politicians – Senator Raises Alarm

Senator raising alarm on leadership quality in Nigeria

Concerns Over Leadership Deficit in Nigeria’s Political Sphere

A prominent Nigerian senator has sounded a warning about the increasing prevalence of unqualified individuals occupying political offices across the country. According to him, many officeholders lack the essential training, discipline, and mindset necessary for effective governance.

Political Positions Reduced to Mere Titles

Speaking at a public event in Abuja, Senator Osita Izunaso, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Markets, lamented that political roles have devolved into mere power positions rather than platforms for competent and ethical service. He emphasized that the widespread misconception that holding an official title automatically confers leadership status has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s governance challenges.

Leadership: Beyond Titles and Elections

Addressing an audience of political figures, professionals, and leadership scholars during the launch of Leadership 365: Daily Reflection for Effective Leadership by Dr. Linus Okorie, Izunaso highlighted the absence of structured leadership development in Nigeria. He noted that many individuals ascend to positions of authority without embodying the core values, discipline, and conduct expected of true leaders.

“In Nigeria, we do not cultivate leaders; we merely gather people who then assume leadership roles without the requisite demeanor. Leadership demands a certain way of speaking and behaving because the public is always observing,” the senator remarked.

Leadership Emerges from Character, Not Just Position

Izunaso further clarified that leadership transcends political office and is often demonstrated in everyday life through responsibility and character. He illustrated this by suggesting that among a group of children, natural leaders emerge based on their behavior and influence rather than formal appointment.

“Leadership is not synonymous with holding a high-ranking position. Often, leaders are born or emerge naturally. Observing a classroom of children, the leader will reveal themselves through their actions and demeanor,” he explained.

Guidance for Nigerian Youth: Prioritizing Character Over Quick Wealth

Addressing the younger generation, Senator Izunaso cautioned against the allure of instant wealth and ostentatious lifestyles. He encouraged youths to seek mentorship and develop strong character traits rather than chasing money as the primary measure of success.

“Young people should reject the ‘get rich quick’ mentality. Instead, they should identify role models based on values and integrity, not financial status,” he advised.

Author’s Perspective: Leadership Development as a Pillar of National Progress

Dr. Linus Okorie, author of Leadership 365 and President of the GOTNI Leadership Centre, underscored that technological advancements alone cannot drive national development. He argued that sustainable progress hinges on nurturing leaders who possess vision, courage, and integrity.

“While technology and artificial intelligence are advancing rapidly in the 21st century, nothing surpasses the transformative power of the human spirit when it is properly directed,” Okorie stated.

He pointed out that countries achieving lasting development have consistently invested in leadership cultivation, making it a deliberate and ongoing effort rather than an afterthought.

“The most successful nations are those that prioritize intentional grooming of future leaders. Leadership development is a critical capital that fuels societal advancement,” he added.

Encouraging Daily Reflection for Effective Leadership

The book Leadership 365 aims to inspire individuals to engage in daily self-assessment regarding their leadership roles and responsibilities, regardless of their official status. Dr. Okorie designed the work to empower anyone seeking to make a positive impact within their communities and beyond.

Ongoing Challenges in Nigerian Leadership

Despite these calls for improved leadership standards, Nigeria continues to grapple with governance issues attributed to leaders selected based on wealth, patronage, or loyalty rather than merit and competence. This persistent problem undermines institutional integrity and public confidence in government.

Recent studies indicate that over 60% of Nigerians express dissatisfaction with the quality of political leadership, citing corruption and inefficiency as major concerns. This underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms in leadership training and selection processes.

Security Forces Neutralize Four Bandits and Free Kidnap Victims in Kaduna and Plateau

In a series of well-coordinated military operations conducted between December 11 and 13, 2025, Nigerian security personnel successfully eliminated four armed bandits and secured the release of abducted individuals in Kaduna and Plateau states.

Targeted Offensive in Kaduna State

On December 11, troops from Sector 5 launched a strategic clearance mission targeting known criminal hideouts in the villages of Dangoma and Godogodo, located within Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State. During the operation, security forces engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gun battle, resulting in the death of three bandits. Several others sustained gunshot injuries and managed to escape, but efforts to track and apprehend them remain ongoing.

Interception of Armed Suspect in Plateau State

The following day, December 12, soldiers from Sector 1 intercepted a suspected bandit, kidnapper, and arms trafficker along the Jebbu-Gada Biu road in Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State. Upon spotting the troops, the suspect opened fire but was quickly subdued. Confiscated from the individual were a pistol, nine rounds of 9mm ammunition, a dagger, a mobile phone, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Preemptive Action Thwarts Planned Attack in Kaduna

On December 13, intelligence reports alerted troops to an imminent assault on Gidan-Saki village in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, Kaduna State. The rapid deployment of forces forced the assailants to abandon their attack plans and retreat into the surrounding bushland.

Ambush Leads to Rescue of Kidnap Victims in Plateau

Also on December 13, Sector 1 troops stationed at Jengre in Plateau State executed a successful ambush following the abduction of four individuals from Rimi village in Bassa Local Government Area. The ensuing firefight resulted in the death of one kidnapper, while all four hostages were rescued unharmed. The operation yielded the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and 13 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Ongoing Efforts to Restore Security

These recent operations underscore the commitment of the Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) to combating banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria’s volatile regions. According to the Nigerian Security Tracker, incidents of armed banditry have decreased by approximately 15% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year, reflecting the impact of intensified military campaigns.

Authorities continue to urge community cooperation and timely intelligence sharing to sustain the momentum in restoring peace and security across Kaduna and Plateau states.
