This initiative is part of a global capacity-building program centered on enhancing leadership and governance skills.

Empowering Local Government Officials for Enhanced Public Service

The delegation’s participation in this international training underscores Oyo State’s dedication to equipping its local government workforce with cutting-edge knowledge and best practices in public administration. Global Exposure: A Catalyst for Progressive Governance

By engaging with global experts and peers in Istanbul, the Oyo State officials gained valuable insights into innovative governance models and leadership techniques. This exposure is expected to translate into improved policy implementation and service delivery back home. For instance, similar international collaborations have led to a 20% increase in administrative efficiency in comparable regions, according to recent studies by the World Bank.

Governor Makinde’s Vision: People-Centered Development

Governor Makinde’s administration prioritizes a governance framework that places citizens at the heart of decision-making processes. This international training aligns perfectly with that vision, aiming to nurture leaders who are not only skilled but also empathetic and responsive to the needs of their communities.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Momentum for Local Government Excellence

Following the completion of the Istanbul program, the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission plans to implement a series of workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions to disseminate the acquired expertise among other local government staff. This strategy ensures that the benefits of the international training permeate throughout the state’s administrative machinery, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

In a significant winter transfer, Ademola Lookman, formerly of Everton and Atalanta BC, has embarked on a new chapter by joining Atlético Madrid in Spain’s La Liga. This move has garnered positive attention, notably from former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni, who commended the transfer as an ideal opportunity for the English forward.

Lookman’s Career Progression and Recent Transfer

After making his mark at Everton in the English Premier League, Lookman transitioned to Italy’s Serie A with Atalanta BC, where he showcased his versatility and attacking prowess. His recent switch to Atlético Madrid represents a strategic step into one of Europe’s most competitive leagues, offering him a platform to further refine his skills and impact.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni’s Perspective on the Move

Yakubu Aiyegbeni, a respected figure in Nigerian football and a former striker with extensive experience in top European leagues, has expressed strong approval of Lookman’s transfer. According to Yakubu, Atlético Madrid’s tactical setup and competitive environment align well with Lookman’s playing style, making the move mutually beneficial. Nigeria: Former Super Eagles coach blasts Pinnick over support for Eric Chelle

by Ayodeji Onibalusi February 4, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Ex-Super Eagles Midfielder Sylvanus Okpala Challenges Amaju Pinnick‘s Support for Eric Chelle

Former Nigerian international and midfield maestro Sylvanus Okpala has openly expressed his disapproval of the former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick’s endorsement of Eric Chelle as the continuing head coach of the Super Eagles. This development comes amid growing public backing for Chelle, yet Okpala remains steadfast in his belief that a Nigerian tactician is the optimal choice to lead the national team forward.

Okpala Advocates for Homegrown Leadership in Nigerian Football

Okpala’s stance highlights a broader debate within Nigerian football circles about the importance of nurturing local coaching talent. He argues that a Nigerian coach, familiar with the cultural nuances and footballing ethos of the country, is better equipped to inspire and develop the Super Eagles. This perspective aligns with a rising trend across African football nations, where homegrown coaches are increasingly entrusted with national team responsibilities to foster sustainable growth.

Public Sentiment and the Coaching Controversy

While Eric Chelle has garnered significant public support due to his recent performances and tactical approach, Okpala cautions against overlooking the potential benefits of appointing a Nigerian coach. He points out that local coaches often possess a deeper understanding of the players’ mentality and the domestic league’s dynamics, which can translate into more cohesive team strategies and long-term success.

Contextualizing the Debate with Recent Trends

In recent years, several African national teams have reaped rewards by investing in indigenous coaching talent. For instance, Senegal’s appointment of Aliou Cissé, a former player turned coach, culminated in their historic Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2021. Similarly, Nigeria’s own football history boasts successful Nigerian coaches who have left lasting legacies. Okpala’s call for a Nigerian coach echoes these success stories and emphasizes the need for continuity and cultural resonance in leadership.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Super Eagles Coaching

As the Super Eagles prepare for upcoming international fixtures and qualification campaigns, the decision on the head coach remains pivotal. Okpala’s viewpoint adds a critical voice to the ongoing discussion, urging the NFF and stakeholders to consider the long-term implications of their choice. Balancing immediate results with sustainable development will be key to ensuring Nigeria’s prominence on the global football stage.

The Cross River State Police Command has successfully detained several individuals implicated in a recent violent altercation stemming from a chieftaincy dispute in Odot Uyi, located within the Odukpani Local Government Area. This intervention follows escalating tensions that disrupted community peace and safety.

Background of the Dispute

The conflict originated from a contested traditional leadership position, a common source of friction in many Nigerian communities where chieftaincy titles hold significant cultural and political weight. In Odot Uyi, competing factions vied for recognition, leading to confrontations that escalated beyond verbal disagreements.

Police Response and Investigation

Upon receiving reports of unrest, the Cross River State Police promptly deployed units to the affected area. Their swift action included securing the scene, mediating between rival groups, and conducting thorough investigations. The arrests were made based on credible intelligence and eyewitness accounts, aiming to restore order and prevent further violence.

Community Impact and Reactions

The chieftaincy dispute disrupted daily life in Odot Uyi, with residents expressing concerns over safety and the potential for prolonged instability. Local leaders have since called for peaceful dialogue and adherence to traditional conflict resolution mechanisms. This incident highlights the delicate balance between cultural heritage and modern governance in maintaining communal harmony.

Broader Context of Chieftaincy Disputes in Nigeria

Chieftaincy conflicts are not unique to Cross River State; they are prevalent across Nigeria, often fueled by political ambitions, land ownership issues, and ethnic rivalries. According to recent data from the Nigerian Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution, over 30% of communal conflicts in the country involve disputes over traditional leadership roles.

Moving Forward: Strategies for Peaceful Resolution

Experts advocate for enhanced community engagement, transparent selection processes for traditional titles, and government-backed mediation to mitigate such conflicts. For instance, in neighboring Akwa Ibom State, the introduction of inclusive councils has significantly reduced chieftaincy-related violence by fostering dialogue among stakeholders.

The Cross River State Police Command remains committed to upholding law and order, ensuring that justice is served while supporting efforts to promote lasting peace in Odot Uyi and beyond.

NRC Accuses Oyo State Government of Destroying Railway Assets Worth Millions in Ibadan

by Ayodeji Onibalusi February 4, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has accused the Oyo State Government of destroying and removing railway assets worth several millions of naira along a protected railway corridor in Ibadan.

In a press release issued in Lagos on Monday night, the NRC disclosed that it received a distressing report concerning the destruction of its fixed rail assets within the Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026.

According to the Corporation, the operation was allegedly carried out under the supervision of the Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Adeyemi Amanda, who was said to be personally present at the site. The NRC further alleged that the chairman led a group comprising suspected thugs, individuals dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and operatives of Amotekun to vandalise and remove NRC properties along the Mile One–Ten axis.

The Corporation stated that assets affected during the operation included railway rails, sleepers, signal poles, billboards, perimeter fences, and other installations belonging to NRC tenants. It stressed that the location in question is a clearly defined and statutorily protected railway right-of-way under federal law.

The NRC also claimed that efforts by its Police Command to halt the destruction were resisted, forcing officers to withdraw from the scene.

Describing the incident as a “grave violation of federal railway assets,” the NRC said it is compiling comprehensive documentation of the incident and will pursue appropriate security, administrative, and legal measures to safeguard its infrastructure and prevent future encroachment on railway corridors nationwide.

The Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, appealed directly to the Oyo State Governor to intervene by calling the local government chairman to order, warning that the situation could lead to a breakdown of law and order and continued abuse of the rights of railway workers. He added that the Corporation remains committed to maintaining law and order despite what it described as provocation.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government has not issued an official response to the allegations.

FG Partners with Six Professional Organizations to Empower 10 Million Nigerian Youths

In a landmark initiative aimed at harnessing Nigeria’s vast human potential, the Federal Government has formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide skill development training to 10 million young Nigerians nationwide. This ambitious program was officially launched by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday, marking a significant step toward addressing youth unemployment and boosting economic growth.

Strategic Collaboration for Nationwide Skill Acquisition

The MoU brings together the Federal Government and six leading professional bodies, each bringing expertise to deliver comprehensive training across various sectors. This collaboration is designed to equip young people and women with market-relevant skills, enabling them to contribute effectively to Nigeria’s economy. By focusing on capacity building, the initiative aims to transform the demographic advantage into tangible socio-economic benefits.

Unlocking Nigeria’s Demographic Dividend

Vice President Shettima emphasized that prioritizing youth and women in skill development is crucial for Nigeria to capitalize on its demographic dividend. With over 60% of the population under the age of 25, Nigeria stands at a pivotal moment where empowering its young workforce can lead to sustainable development. The program targets sectors such as technology, agriculture, and entrepreneurship, reflecting current market demands and future growth areas.

Addressing Youth Unemployment with Practical Solutions

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, youth unemployment in Nigeria remains a pressing challenge, with rates exceeding 30% in recent years. This initiative seeks to reverse this trend by providing free, accessible training that enhances employability and fosters self-reliance. For instance, similar programs in countries like Kenya have successfully reduced youth joblessness by integrating digital skills training with mentorship and job placement services.

Looking Ahead: Building a Skilled and Inclusive Workforce

The Federal Government’s commitment to this large-scale training program signals a proactive approach to economic diversification and social inclusion. By empowering 10 million Nigerians, especially women and young people, the initiative aims to create a resilient workforce capable of driving innovation and entrepreneurship. This effort aligns with Nigeria’s broader development goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to quality education and decent work.

The Complex Nature of Humanity: A Critical Reflection

Understanding Human Flaws and Their Impact

Human beings have often been criticized for their shortcomings, including tendencies toward selfishness and destructive behavior. Throughout history, these traits have led to exploitation of natural resources and social injustices. The consequences of such actions are evident in environmental degradation and widening inequality across the globe.

Historical Patterns of Exploitation and Their Modern Consequences

For centuries, humans have prioritized short-term gains over sustainable practices, resulting in significant harm to ecosystems and communities. For example, deforestation rates have surged, with the World Bank reporting a loss of approximately 10 million hectares of forest annually as of 2023. This relentless exploitation not only threatens biodiversity but also exacerbates climate change, impacting vulnerable populations worldwide.

Reevaluating Human Potential: Beyond Negativity

Despite these challenges, it is essential to recognize the capacity for growth and positive change inherent in humanity. Innovations in renewable energy, such as the global solar power capacity reaching over 1 terawatt in 2024, demonstrate a shift toward more responsible stewardship of the planet. Social movements advocating for equity and environmental justice further highlight the potential for collective action to address past mistakes.

Moving Forward: Embracing Responsibility and Hope

To overcome the destructive patterns of the past, society must foster a culture of accountability and empathy. Educational initiatives that emphasize sustainability and ethical decision-making are crucial in shaping future generations. By learning from history and embracing a more conscientious approach, humanity can transform its legacy from one of greed and decay to one of resilience and renewal.

Death Sentence Delivered to Armed Robbery Convict in Nasarawa State

In a significant legal ruling, a High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has condemned Saidu Idi to death by hanging. The judgment follows his conviction on charges of armed robbery and culpable homicide, underscoring the judiciary’s firm stance against violent crimes in the region.

Details of the Crime and Judicial Proceedings

Saidu Idi was found guilty of orchestrating a violent robbery that resulted in the loss of life. The court meticulously examined the evidence presented, including eyewitness testimonies and forensic reports, which conclusively linked Idi to the offenses. This verdict reflects the court’s commitment to upholding justice and deterring criminal activities that threaten public safety.

Contextualizing Crime and Punishment in Nasarawa State

Nasarawa State has witnessed a surge in armed robbery cases over recent years, prompting intensified law enforcement efforts. According to the latest statistics from the Nigerian Police Force, armed robbery incidents in the state have increased by approximately 15% in the past year alone. The judiciary’s decisive actions, such as this death sentence, aim to curb this upward trend and restore community confidence.

Legal Implications and the Role of Capital Punishment

The imposition of the death penalty in cases involving armed robbery and homicide remains a contentious yet pivotal aspect of Nigeria’s criminal justice system. While some advocate for alternative sentencing, the courts maintain that capital punishment serves as a critical deterrent against heinous crimes. This case exemplifies the balance between enforcing strict penalties and ensuring due process.

Community Impact and Future Outlook

The sentencing of Saidu Idi sends a clear message to criminal elements operating within Nasarawa State and beyond. Community leaders have expressed support for the ruling, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and collaboration with law enforcement agencies. Moving forward, the state government plans to enhance security measures and invest in crime prevention programs to safeguard its citizens.

Conclusion

The Lafia High Court’s decision to sentence Saidu Idi to death by hanging marks a critical moment in Nasarawa State’s fight against violent crime. By reinforcing the consequences of armed robbery and culpable homicide, the judiciary plays a vital role in promoting justice and public safety. As the state confronts ongoing security challenges, such rulings underscore the importance of a robust legal framework in maintaining order.
