OYOGist.com has learned that the federal government is currently making efforts to track down illegal spectrums operating in the southeastern part of the country. To this end the Federal Executive Council, FEC today, approved the sum of N654m.
Specifically, as revealed the the minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ibrahim Pantami, FEC approved the sum of N 653,886,584 for the purchase and deployment of systems that will be used to monitor spectrums in the South- Eastern part of the country, as reported by the Punch Newspaper.
The minister told newsmen after the FEC meeting that “From January to August 2020 , within the period of eight months, we discovered 320 frequencies being used all over the country and of this 320, 106 were illegal”. He said this is very worrisome because these illegal spectrums or frequencies have the capacity to compromise national security and hence the need for the government to act.
The minister stated that on account of the findings, his ministry requested “the approval of council for deployment of hybrid spectrum monitoring system , most importantly to focus on the South- Eastern zone of the country”.
According to the minister while other zones are already been monitored the southeastern part was not been monitored. He said that government want to be able to increase it’s monitoring capacity and also ensure that the legal ones renew their licences annually while the illegal ones will be dealt with in accordance with the law of the land.
