The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed police commands across Nigeria to begin a nationwide crackdown on vehicles operating without valid registration plates or with obscured, altered, or tampered number plates.
The directive forms part of broader efforts to tackle insecurity and improve the ability of security agencies to track criminal activities. According to police authorities, vehicles without proper identification have increasingly been linked to crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent offenses.
Under the new enforcement operation, officers have been instructed to stop and impound vehicles found violating registration requirements. Police leadership emphasized that enforcement should be applied uniformly without favoritism or exemptions.
Security experts have long argued that proper vehicle registration plays a critical role in modern policing. Accurate identification systems enable law enforcement agencies to trace suspects, monitor suspicious movements, and strengthen public safety efforts.
The announcement comes amid ongoing national concerns about insecurity and follows similar enforcement operations in parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, where authorities have already intensified checks on vehicles with obscured plates and other registration irregularities.
