The Osun State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on political violence and cult-related activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election, arresting a suspect allegedly linked to the killing of a teenager and apprehending 23 other individuals for various offences connected to political thuggery and cultism.
According to the police, the arrests followed intelligence-led operations carried out across several communities in the state as security agencies moved to prevent a breakdown of law and order before the polls. Authorities said some of the suspects were allegedly involved in violent clashes, intimidation of residents and other criminal activities.
Items reportedly recovered from some of the suspects include weapons and materials linked to cult groups. The police disclosed that investigations are ongoing and vowed to ensure that all those found culpable are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The development comes amid growing concerns over rising political tension and cult-related violence in Osun State, with security agencies assuring residents that adequate measures are being put in place to guarantee a peaceful and credible governorship election.
