President Bola Tinubu has formally sent the long-anticipated State Police Bill to the Senate.
Titled the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) State Police Bill, 2026,” the piece of legislation seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to lay down a solid legal foundation for establishing state-controlled police forces across the country.
The executive communication was read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In the letter, President Tinubu urged federal lawmakers to fast-track the bill, describing it as a fundamental pillar of his administration’s plan to reorganize Nigeria’s security structure and offer stronger protection to citizens.
The President noted that the draft legislation builds upon extensive foundational work already carried out by both chambers of the National Assembly. He also emphasized that the bill includes critical regulatory safeguards designed to ensure that a dual-policing system (federal and state) operates smoothly without friction.
