The national coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu has allegedly made the revelation that patients who need a ventilator may not survive. He made this announcement at the Working Group meeting on Wednesday.

He reaffirmed the need for Nigerians to take the necessary precautions, especially the elderly and others at high risk of contracting the coronavirus. The survival rate is 20 to 30% when on a respirator.

“That’s why it’s important to avoid getting COVID-19 in the first place, because if you get COVID and fall into the risk groups of the elderly, diabetics or cardiovascular disease and end up on a respirator, you’re more likely to stay on the respirator even in the best health care system. And that’s why in Europe, the United States, etc. People have died”.

Most of the deaths have been associated with respirators,” said Aliyu. COVID-19 cases in Nigeria now total 3,145, with 103 deaths recorded and 534 patients discharged.
