Osun PDP Members Voice Concerns Over Party's Future Ahead of 2027 Elections

Osun PDP Faction Calls for Urgent National Intervention Amid Rising Internal Conflicts

The Osun Patriotic Front, a faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, has appealed to the party’s national executives to step in promptly to address escalating tensions that threaten the party’s cohesion ahead of the upcoming primary elections.

Threats Targeting Primary Venue Operators Raise Alarm

In an official communiqué signed by Chief Saheed Ayodele, Chairman of the group, it was revealed that individuals allegedly affiliated with the party have issued numerous threats against those managing the designated location for the PDP’s primaries. Ayodele characterized these intimidations as a deliberate effort to undermine the electoral process.

Internal Leadership’s Role in Deepening Party Divisions

The faction further criticized the state-level leadership for adopting what it described as an “anti-party stance,” which has exacerbated the already fragile situation. Ayodele specifically accused the state chairman and the governor of demonstrating a lack of dedication to the party’s advancement, highlighting their apparent reluctance to back the PDP’s candidate for the forthcoming 2026 elections.

“For several months, the Governor has been contemplating defecting from the party, and these undermining actions amount to a betrayal of our collective goals,” the statement asserted.

Allegations of Intimidation by Governor and Allies

Intelligence reports cited by the Osun Patriotic Front suggest that the governor and his supporters have threatened violence against party members intending to participate in the primaries scheduled for December 2. The group condemned these threats and called on those responsible to cease harassing the venue operators, emphasizing that these individuals are simply businesspeople conducting legitimate activities.

Commitment to Conducting Primaries Despite Challenges

Despite the prevailing unrest, the Osun Patriotic Front reaffirmed its determination to proceed with the primaries as planned. The group assured party members and supporters that the PDP will present a strong candidate in the 2026 elections, urging all eligible members to participate actively and vote without intimidation.

With Nigeria’s political landscape becoming increasingly competitive, the Osun PDP’s internal dynamics will be critical in shaping the party’s prospects. Recent data from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicates that voter turnout in Osun State has fluctuated significantly in past elections, underscoring the importance of unity and effective mobilization within parties.

Party members are encouraged to remain vigilant and engaged to ensure a transparent and peaceful primary process that reflects the democratic values of the PDP.

“A O Rowoyin”: Will Oyo Deputy Governor Relay Okeho’s Declaration To Governor Makinde?

By Dayo Ogunsola

Saturday, November 29, 2025, marked a significant moment for the people of Oke-Ogun, especially those residing in Kajola Local Government Area. On this day, they made a resounding statement to the Oyo State Governor, emphasizing that despite years of neglect, Kajola remains an integral part of the progressive Pace-Setter State.

Okeho Day: A Celebration with a Message

Okeho Day, traditionally a festive occasion filled with cultural displays and communal pride, was no exception. It served as a platform to honor the accomplishments of the community’s sons and daughters and to celebrate the rich heritage of the Onjo Amokoko kingdom. However, beneath the festivities lay a powerful undercurrent of dissatisfaction and a demand for recognition.

The residents of Kajola’s administrative center made it unmistakably clear that they refuse to be sidelined any longer. Their voices echoed a strong message: the current Oyo State Government, led by Engr. Seyi Makinde, has seemingly overlooked Kajola’s needs and contributions.

Deputy Governor’s Visit Met with Unfiltered Feedback

Deputy Governor Barrister Bayo Lawal, representing the Governor as the event’s special guest, faced an unexpected challenge. As he attempted to convey the administration’s achievements in the area, the crowd interrupted with a loud chorus of “A O ROWOYIN!”-a Yoruba phrase meaning “we have seen nothing from your government.” The reaction was so overwhelming that even the Local Government Chairman appeared visibly unsettled.

Though momentarily thrown off, Barrister Lawal acknowledged the clarity of the message. The pressing question remains: will he courageously communicate this candid feedback back to Governor Makinde?

Persistent Neglect of Kajola Local Government

Since the Makinde administration began in 2019, Kajola has been one of the most overlooked areas in Oyo State. Despite the passage of six years, tangible development within the council is virtually nonexistent. The Governor’s opposition to local government autonomy has further marginalized elected officials, reducing them to symbolic roles without real authority or resources.

While it is true that Governor Makinde has completed road projects such as the Moniya-Iseyin and Oyo-Iseyin roads, these remain the few visible “democratic dividends” for Kajola. If these are the only improvements after such a lengthy period, the people’s frustration is understandable.

Wider Implications for Oke-Ogun Communities

The stark criticism from Okeho raises concerns about the conditions in other parts of Kajola Local Government. Take Ilero, the second-largest town after Okeho, for instance. Its infrastructure is in a dire state, with internal roads crumbling and the main thoroughfare dating back to the era of General Ibrahim Babangida, now severely dilapidated.

Recently, a visitor from Abuja, en route to a funeral in Otu (Itesiwaju Local Government headquarters), passed through Ilero and lamented the poor state of the roads, remarking on the government’s neglect of the community.

Political Divisions Yield No Progress

Despite these hardships, political rivalries during election seasons often pit neighbors against each other, fracturing friendships and family bonds. This is especially disheartening given that the Local Government Executive Chairman hails from the community, yet no significant progress has been made.

Beyond infrastructure, Ilero continues to grapple with ongoing security challenges, and the few existing facilities are relics of decades-old efforts rather than recent development.

A Call for Genuine Attention and Action

In summary, if Okeho’s residents are boldly declaring “A O ROWOYIN” to the state government, then the people of Ilero can only echo with “A O GBORO-YIN” – meaning “we have not been heard.” It is a heartfelt plea for acknowledgment and meaningful intervention.

Dayo Ogunsola, a native of Ilero, reports from Abuja. He can be contacted at ogunsolasurajudeendayo@gmail.com.

President Tinubu Appoints General Christopher Gwabin Musa as Nigeria’s Defence Minister

In a significant cabinet reshuffle, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put forward General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the former Chief of Defence Staff, as the new Minister of Defence. This appointment comes in the wake of the recent resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar earlier this week. The official nomination was communicated to Senate President Godswill Akpabio through a formal letter submitted on Tuesday.

General Musa’s extensive military background and leadership experience position him as a strategic choice to oversee Nigeria’s defence portfolio amid ongoing security challenges. His tenure as Chief of Defence Staff was marked by efforts to enhance military coordination and operational effectiveness, qualities expected to be pivotal in his new ministerial role.

The Senate is now set to review and confirm the nomination, a process that underscores the importance of legislative oversight in key government appointments. This transition reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening national security through experienced leadership.

General Musa, celebrating his 58th birthday on December 25, held the position of Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 until October 2025. He is recognized as one of Nigeria’s most seasoned and highly honored military leaders. Among his numerous accolades, he was awarded the distinguished Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.

President Tinubu Affirms Trust in General Musa’s Leadership Amid Nigeria’s Security Challenges

In a recent statement from the State House, President Bola Tinubu conveyed his unwavering confidence in General Musa’s ability to enhance Nigeria’s security framework. As the country grapples with multifaceted security threats, the President emphasized that General Musa is well-equipped to steer the Ministry of Defence towards greater stability and resilience.

With Nigeria facing ongoing issues such as insurgency, banditry, and communal conflicts, the role of the Defence Ministry has never been more critical. President Tinubu’s endorsement highlights the administration’s commitment to reinforcing national security through experienced and capable leadership.

Celebrating an Illustrious Military Journey

An Exemplary Path in Armed Service

General Musa, a native of Sokoto born in 1967, pursued his early education within the state, completing both primary and secondary schooling locally. He then advanced to the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria. In 1986, he secured admission to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree by 1991. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, marking the beginning of his military career.

Throughout his distinguished career, General Musa has occupied numerous pivotal leadership and administrative roles, such as:

Throughout an extensive military career, this officer has held numerous pivotal roles, including General Staff Officer 1 for Training & Operations at Headquarters 81 Division and Commanding Officer of the 73 Battalion. He has also served as Assistant Director for Army Policy & Plans and represented the Infantry within the Nigerian Army Armour Corps Training Team. In 2019, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff (Training & Operations) at the Infantry Centre & Corps. His leadership extended to commanding Sector 3 during Operation Lafiya Dole and later the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Region. Democratic Republic of the Congo Declares End to Ebola Outbreak in Kasai Province

Successful Containment of the 16th Ebola Outbreak

Kinshasa- The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has officially announced the conclusion of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Kasai Province. This declaration follows a 42-day period without any new reported cases since the last patient was discharged from the treatment center on October 19, 2025.

Dr. Samuel Roger Kamba, Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, stated, “Based on comprehensive scientific data and operational evidence confirming the interruption of virus transmission, I formally declare the end of the 16th Ebola outbreak in the DRC.”

Coordinated Response and Impact

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners, executed a swift and well-organized response that was crucial in halting the virus’s spread. The outbreak primarily affected the Bulape Health Zone, a remote rural area with limited access to roads and telecommunications. Throughout the outbreak, 64 cases were identified-53 confirmed and 11 probable-with 45 fatalities recorded.

To support the national efforts, WHO deployed 112 experts and frontline responders, while over 150 tonnes of medical supplies and equipment were delivered to safeguard healthcare workers and local communities.

Innovative Treatment and Vaccination Efforts

One of the outbreak’s notable advancements was the introduction of the Infectious Disease Treatment Module (IDTM), a novel facility designed to enhance patient care and safety. Developed jointly by WHO, the World Food Programme, and other partners, the IDTM provided a safer environment for healthcare workers and offered more dignified treatment for patients.

Vaccination campaigns were pivotal in controlling the outbreak, with more than 47,500 individuals immunized. Initially, vaccination targeted contacts of confirmed Ebola cases before expanding to surrounding communities in Bulape.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, played an instrumental role by facilitating the rapid deployment of over 48,000 vaccine doses from its global stockpile. This support included prepositioning vaccines within the country, funding delivery logistics, and maintaining essential cold chain infrastructure, all in partnership with WHO and the Ministry of Health.

Statements from Key Health Leaders

Dr. Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, praised the rapid containment, saying, “Ending this Ebola outbreak within three months is a remarkable feat. The collaboration between national authorities, healthcare workers, partners, and communities in such a remote area exemplifies effective public health action.” He added that WHO’s involvement has strengthened local health systems, including improvements in water sanitation and safer patient care, which will benefit communities long-term.

Allyson Russell, Senior Programme Manager for Global Health Security at Gavi, emphasized the importance of vaccination and coordinated response efforts: “This swift resolution highlights the power of preparedness and vaccination in combating deadly diseases. The DRC’s experience demonstrates that with timely vaccine deployment and comprehensive interventions like surveillance and case management, Ebola outbreaks can be rapidly controlled, significantly reducing illness and mortality.”

Addressing Infrastructure Challenges and Long-Term Resilience

One significant challenge during the outbreak was the lack of a reliable clean water supply at Bulape hospital, essential for clinical care. WHO and partners installed a piped water system to the hospital and public taps, ensuring ongoing access to safe water for the community. Rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts continue at the hospital and other health facilities to enhance the resilience of the local health infrastructure.

Background and Future Preparedness

This outbreak marks the 16th Ebola occurrence in the DRC since the virus was first identified in 1976. Kasai Province previously experienced outbreaks in 2007 and 2008. Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated surfaces.

With the outbreak officially over, surveillance efforts are transitioning from Ebola-specific monitoring to the broader Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system. WHO remains engaged with national and provincial authorities to maintain vigilance and ensure rapid response capabilities in case of any resurgence.

Ongoing Surveillance and Survivor Support

The DRC has initiated a 90-day enhanced disease surveillance period to monitor for any new cases. Additionally, a survivor care program, supported by WHO and partners, is providing comprehensive post-recovery assistance to Ebola survivors, addressing both medical and psychosocial needs.

Malawi advances efforts to finalize its Health Labour Market Analysis for Evidence-based Health Workforce Planning and Development

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 2, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Strengthening Malawi’s Health Workforce for Universal Health Coverage by 2030

Ensuring the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and resilient primary health care (PHC) systems depends fundamentally on having a skilled, motivated, and adequately staffed health workforce capable of delivering essential health services across all care levels.

Advancing the National Health Labour Market Analysis

In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), Malawi’s Ministry of Health is making significant progress toward finalizing a comprehensive national Health Labour Market Analysis (HLMA). This analysis is being aligned with methodologies used in other countries to ensure comparability and to support high-level multisectoral policy discussions aimed at improving human resources for health (HRH) planning and prioritization in Malawi.

Understanding the Health Labour Market Framework

The HLMA employs a systematic economic framework to evaluate the health workforce by analyzing the dynamic relationships between the supply of health workers, the demand for their services, the population’s health needs, and the available financial resources. This approach enables policymakers to assess the feasibility and impact of various workforce strategies, thereby enhancing governance and evidence-based decision-making in the health sector.

Progress and Challenges in Malawi’s Health Workforce

Malawi’s Health Sector Strategic Plan 2023-2030 has prioritized investments in health workforce education, recruitment, performance management, professional development, and the Human Resources Information System. These efforts have contributed to a notable increase in the health workforce, growing from 34,287 workers in 2019 to 47,555 in 2024-a remarkable 38.7% rise over six years.

Despite this encouraging growth, critical staffing shortages persist, particularly in key cadres. Nurse/Midwife Technicians face a vacancy rate of 40%, while Medical Officers and Specialists experience a 32% shortfall, and Medical Assistants are understaffed by 25%. Addressing these gaps is essential for the effective delivery of Malawi’s essential health package.

Data-Driven Workforce Planning and Policy Development

To tackle these challenges, the Ministry of Health, supported by WHO, is finalizing the HLMA, which will analyze political, economic, and training factors influencing workforce supply and demand, alongside population health needs. The evidence generated will inform long-term policies on workforce development, recruitment, and management, ensuring alignment with Malawi’s health priorities.

Capacity Building and Multisectoral Collaboration

With funding from the United Kingdom’s Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC), WHO’s Africa Regional Office facilitated a reorientation workshop for a multisectoral team on HLMA methodologies, including the epidemiology-based health workforce needs assessment using the WHO AFRO HLMA Support Tool. Participants conducted a thorough analysis of Malawi’s health workforce data across all components of the Health Labour Market framework.

Preliminary Findings and Future Directions

Initial results include estimates of workforce requirements tailored to Malawi’s epidemiological profile and service delivery demands. The finalized HLMA report will present evidence-based policy questions to guide a multisectoral technical dialogue, fostering national consensus on strategic directions for health workforce planning and management.

Voices from the Field

“The Health Labour Market Analysis will provide Malawi with a robust evidence base to better understand workforce dynamics and enhance planning,” stated Mr. Duff Msukwa, Director of Human Resources for Health at the Ministry of Health. “By leveraging data-driven insights, we can more effectively align our health workforce with population needs, ensuring equitable access to quality care and advancing the goals of our Health Sector Strategic Plan III.”

A diverse multisectoral team-including representatives from government ministries, the Nurses and Midwives Council, Medical Council, Christian Health Association of Malawi, health training institutions, and professionals from 72 health occupations-participated in the HLMA data analysis and needs assessment held from November 10 to 21, 2025.

“WHO is honored to support Malawi in this comprehensive Health Labour Market Analysis, which lays the foundation for sustainable workforce planning and improved health service quality at all levels,” said Dr. Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo, WHO Representative to Malawi. “This initiative addresses immediate workforce gaps while setting the stage for long-term investments that will bring Malawi closer to Universal Health Coverage and a resilient health system.”

Building a Resilient Health System for the Future

As Malawi faces ongoing workforce challenges and increasing demand for health services-including responses to health emergencies-the completion of the HLMA will equip policymakers with context-specific evidence to align workforce strategies with actual population health needs. Grounding health workforce planning in solid data reinforces Malawi’s commitment to developing a resilient, equitable health system capable of delivering UHC and ensuring health security for all citizens.

WHO Director-General Witnesses Efforts to Restore Lives Affected by Fistula

by Ayodeji Onibalusi December 2, 2025
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Healing Voices: A Journey Through Angola’s Fight Against Obstetric Fistula

Amid the gentle harmonies of a choir formed by hospitalized women, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, made a poignant visit to the fistula ward at Azancot de Menezes Hospital. The experience deeply touched him as he witnessed firsthand the profound challenges faced by women suffering from obstetric fistula.

The Silent Struggle of Women with Obstetric Fistula

Every step through the ward echoed the gravity of the situation and highlighted the unwavering dedication of healthcare workers striving to heal and restore dignity to women burdened by this condition. Obstetric fistula, a severe childbirth injury, paradoxically emerges from one of life’s most miraculous events: childbirth. It predominantly affects women in low-resource settings who endure prolonged, obstructed labor without timely medical intervention.

Understanding Obstetric Fistula: Causes and Consequences

Obstetric fistula occurs when prolonged pressure during labor creates an abnormal opening between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum, leading to uncontrollable leakage of urine or feces. While obstructed labor is the primary cause, fistulas can also result from surgical complications, sexual violence, or traumatic injuries. Globally, it is estimated that over 2 million women live with untreated fistula, with approximately 50,000 to 100,000 new cases annually, predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia.

In Angola alone, around 20,000 women are affected, many of whom face social ostracism, abandonment by partners, and exclusion from their communities, compounding their physical suffering with emotional and psychological trauma.

Vangulula Centre: A Beacon of Hope and Renewal

Hope shines through the Vangulula Centre at Azancot de Menezes Maternity Hospital. Named after the Kimbundu word for “restoring life,” this facility, established by the Vangulula Foundation, offers more than just surgical repair. It provides comprehensive rehabilitation, social reintegration programs, and preventive education, including family planning and improved childbirth care, especially targeting rural populations where access to healthcare remains limited.

Progress and Persistent Challenges

From 2014 to 2024, the centre has successfully treated 3,195 women, boasting a remarkable 98% success rate in straightforward cases. Despite these achievements, obstacles such as the absence of a dedicated fistula operating theatre, limited funding, and a shortage of specialized medical personnel continue to hinder the pace and scale of treatment, often extending hospital stays and reducing the number of surgeries performed.

Voices of Leadership: Commitment to Dignity and Inclusion

Dr. Tedros emphasizes that “treating women with fistula is a profound humanitarian act that restores their dignity and hope.” He calls for unified efforts from governments, families, and health organizations to provide unwavering support and solidarity.

Echoing this sentiment, Angola’s Minister of Health, Dr. Sílvia Lutucuta, highlights that “obstetric fistula remains a significant public health challenge. Although preventable and treatable, it is still shrouded in stigma and often leads to family abandonment. This underscores the critical need for interventions that empower women and foster their social inclusion post-treatment.”

Fistula Prevention and Treatment: A Global Development Priority

Addressing obstetric fistula transcends medical care; it is intrinsically linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, human rights, and health equity. Each woman healed represents a restored life, a renewed narrative, and a reclaimed future. Collective commitment is vital to ensure these women-symbols of resilience and the continuity of humanity-can once again embrace joy, hope, and the freedom to dream.

Post-session activities featured dynamic workshops presenting exemplary practices and novel methodologies for operationalizing One Health at grassroots and regional levels. A gallery walk exhibition allowed partners and local organizations to display successful projects and collaborative frameworks, illustrating the tangible benefits of integrated health strategies.

Concluding Panel: Operationalizing One Health in Ethiopia

The day culminated with a panel discussion focused on practical steps to embed One Health approaches nationwide. Technical presentations and open forums facilitated knowledge exchange among specialists from human, animal, and environmental health sectors, fostering a shared commitment to advancing Ethiopia’s health resilience.

Looking Ahead

As zoonotic diseases continue to pose global threats-accounting for over 60% of emerging infectious diseases worldwide-Ethiopia’s proactive embrace of One Health collaboration exemplifies a forward-thinking model. By integrating expertise and resources across disciplines, the Somali Region is positioning itself to better anticipate, prevent, and respond to complex health challenges, ultimately enhancing the wellbeing of its communities and ecosystems.

The backbone of the MOI Awards was its commitment to authenticity. The editorial team embarked on an exhaustive research journey, producing more than 500 articles that delved deep into the lives and contributions of nominees across 18 categories.

  • Comprehensive background checks and verification of achievements.
  • Interviews with industry leaders and peers to provide context and credibility.
  • Analytical insights into each nominee’s sectoral impact.
  • Storytelling that captured the human element behind professional success.

One writer shared, “We uncovered narratives of resilience-like the innovator who launched a startup from a modest home office or the community leader who transformed local economies. These stories deserved more than surface-level recognition.”

The team’s dedication to accuracy meant cross-referencing data, consulting financial documents, and engaging with multiple sources to ensure every detail was factual. By October, this extensive content repository not only informed judges but also fueled public engagement and social media conversations.

Communication Strategies: Navigating 600+ Emails and Numerous Calls

Parallel to content creation, the communications team undertook the formidable task of engaging a diverse and busy group of nominees, sponsors, and dignitaries. Over 600 personalized emails were dispatched, each crafted to resonate with the recipient’s unique profile and category.

  • Tailored messaging that balanced professionalism with warmth.
  • Clear, respectful calls-to-action encouraging participation and confirmation.
  • Persistent yet courteous follow-ups to maximize response rates.

Countless phone calls supplemented these efforts, requiring navigation through gatekeepers, managing time zone differences for diaspora nominees, and leaving impactful voicemails. “Sometimes, we’d send dozens of emails with only a handful of replies, but persistence was key,” a team member reflects.

These efforts culminated in pivotal confirmations-from government officials to industry icons-validating the team’s relentless pursuit of engagement.

Overcoming Adversity: Resilience Amidst Challenges

The journey was not without its hurdles. There were moments when the enormity of the task seemed overwhelming-tight budgets, logistical setbacks, unresponsive sponsors, and Lagos’s notorious traffic threatened to derail progress.

“There were at least three critical junctures when we doubted if the event would come together,” admits a team member. A particularly tough week in September saw multiple sponsors withdraw, key nominees delay responses, and technical glitches disrupt video production.

During a tense strategy meeting, Ethelbert posed a simple yet powerful question: “Do you believe in this mission?” The unanimous affirmation reignited the team’s spirit, reinforcing their commitment to push forward despite obstacles.

Marketing the Mission: Authentic Storytelling in a Crowded Digital Space

In Nigeria’s vibrant and often noisy digital landscape, the marketing team faced the challenge of promoting an awards ceremony that prioritized substance over spectacle. Their approach centered on genuine storytelling rather than flashy promotions.

  • Managing social media channels with engaging, relatable content.
  • Collaborating with influencers who aligned with MOI’s values.
  • Securing media coverage across print, radio, television, and online platforms.
  • Designing visually appealing campaign materials that reflected the event’s prestige.
  • Monitoring analytics to refine strategies in real-time.

By weaving nominee journeys into the narrative and fostering two-way conversations, the marketing team successfully transformed passive audiences into active supporters. By November, the MOI Awards had become a trending topic across Nigerian social media, blending organic buzz with targeted campaigns.

Visual Storytelling: Crafting Compelling Multimedia Content

Recognizing the power of visuals, the video and content team played a pivotal role in bringing the MOI Awards’ stories to life. Their portfolio included:

  • Category-specific nominee announcement videos.
  • Behind-the-scenes footage capturing the team’s dedication.
  • Teaser trailers to build excitement ahead of the event.
  • Interview segments featuring nominees and key stakeholders.
  • Platform-tailored social media clips to maximize reach.

Despite challenges such as unpredictable weather, power outages, and Lagos traffic, the team’s flexibility ensured production stayed on track. “We often had to reschedule shoots multiple times, but our commitment never wavered,” a videographer recalls.

The resulting content not only promoted the event but also documented a significant chapter in Nigeria’s evolving narrative of excellence.

Final Preparations and Execution: October to November

As the event date neared, the focus shifted from planning to flawless execution. Every element-from seating charts and lighting design to award plaques and security-was scrutinized and perfected.

The team endured long hours, often working 16-hour days fueled by determination and caffeine. Early morning briefings and late-night debriefs became routine as the vision crystallized into reality.

Gradually, confirmations from guests and sponsors solidified, the venue transformed into a stunning setting, and the program’s flow was fine-tuned. The atmosphere shifted from anxious anticipation to confident excitement.

The Grand Event: November 29, 2025

When the doors opened at the Landmark Event Centre, the months of preparation culminated in a spectacular evening. The red carpet welcomed luminaries, while hosts Frank Edoho and Morayo Afolabi-Brown expertly guided the program.

Distinguished guests, including Governors Sanwo-Olu, Uba Sani, and Peter Mbah, were honored, and keynote speaker Wyman Winbush delivered an inspiring address that resonated deeply with attendees.

Across 18 categories, winners were celebrated with heartfelt speeches, joyous tears, and vibrant applause. The event’s energy radiated beyond the venue, sparking lively conversations on social media and across the continent.

For the dedicated team behind the scenes, witnessing the event’s success was profoundly rewarding. “Seeing the pride and inspiration on everyone’s faces made every sacrifice worthwhile,” a team member reflects. “We didn’t just host an awards night; we ignited a movement.”

Closing Remarks from the MOI Awards Team

“To all who believed in the MOI Awards-the nominees who entrusted us with their stories, the sponsors who backed our vision, the media partners who amplified our message, the guests who showed up in support, and the online community who engaged passionately-thank you,” the team expresses in unison.

“This event was never merely about accolades. It was about building a platform that genuinely honors those shaping Africa’s future. Every late night, every challenging call, every rewritten article was dedicated to this purpose.”

The MOI Awards 2025 stands as proof that with clear vision, unwavering dedication, and a committed team, Nigeria can deliver world-class events that celebrate authentic African excellence. And if asked, every member of that team would say without hesitation: “We’d gladly do it all again.”

From Small Beginnings to Industry Masters: 7 MOI Winners Who Started with Almost Nothing

Not all tales of triumph are scripted in corporate offices or passed down through generations. Some of the most motivating success stories emerge from humble beginnings-in street corners, barbershops, and neighborhoods where hope once seemed out of reach.

The 2025 Masters of Industry (MOI) Awards honor seven extraordinary Nigerians whose journeys to prominence were fueled not by privilege, but by relentless determination, passion, and unwavering faith in their dreams.

1. Adeola Gold: The Afrobeat Icon

MOI Recognition: Music Innovator of the Year

Before Adeola Gold rose to international acclaim as the Afrobeats maestro “AG Baby,” his nights were spent resting on benches at Tipper Garage, Ikorodu. A viral 2005 photo captures a young Adeola dozing on a roadside bench, a poignant reminder of his modest origins.

Born Adeola Kosoko, he was raised in neighborhoods where music was a distant aspiration. His early attempts to shine in his church choir went unnoticed, and his parents relocated from Ifako Ijaiye to Ikotun to provide him with better prospects.

Driven by passion rather than profit, he once traversed the bustling Lagos traffic from Maryland to Ikeja, selling his self-produced CDs. In 2010, he and a friend pooled N150,000 to shoot his debut music video. His breakthrough came in 2014 with “Sade,” a highlife reinterpretation of One Direction’s “Story of My Life,” which secured him a contract with YBNL Nation.

His first album, Gold, debuted at number seven on the Billboard World Albums chart, marking his global breakthrough. Today, signed to Def Jam Recordings, Adeola has released six studio albums, collaborated with international stars like Pharrell Williams, and champions sickle cell awareness through his foundation.

From a boy who once couldn’t afford school fees to a global music sensation, Adeola’s story exemplifies the transformative power of perseverance.

2. Tunde Onakoya: Chess Champion and Change-Maker

MOI Recognition: Citizen of the Year

Hailing from the impoverished neighborhoods of Ikorodu, Lagos, Tunde Onakoya’s journey began where many dreams falter. He discovered chess not in elite clubs but in a local barbershop. When his family struggled to pay for his secondary education, his mother worked as a school cleaner to keep him in school.

Chess became Tunde’s identity and lifeline. Rising to become Nigeria’s 13th-ranked player, he also earned a gold medal diploma in Computer Science from Yaba College of Technology. Yet, his most profound impact lies beyond personal accolades.

In 2018, he launched Chess in Slums Africa, bringing chess to underserved communities like Majidun, Makoko, and Oshodi Under-bridge. His initiative has empowered over 200 children, with 20 securing lifelong scholarships by 2021.

In April 2024, Tunde set a Guinness World Record by playing chess continuously for 60 hours in New York’s Times Square, enduring physical hardship to raise funds for education in slums. His motto resonates deeply: “Greatness can emerge from the smallest places.”

3. Sophia Ugbegua: The Visionary Behind Somo by Somo

Sophia Adesomo Ugbegua’s path to fashion prominence defied convention. Armed with degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from Caleb University, she could have pursued a tech career. Instead, inspired by her mother’s successful fashion business, she ventured into design.

In 2015, Sophia launched Somo by Somo, a brand that channels her bold and glamorous persona. Starting with limited resources, she built a reputation for exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail, establishing one of Lagos’s premier fashion labels.

Today, Somo by Somo offers couture, ready-to-wear, and bridal collections that have adorned Nigeria’s elite and captivated fashion lovers across Africa. Sophia’s journey underscores how passion can redefine one’s destiny.

4. Folagade Banks: Nigeria’s Leading Comedy Content Creator

MOI Recognition: Content Creator of the Year

Abiri Tobi Festus, popularly known as Folagade Banks, grew up in Osun State in a disciplined household-his mother a headmistress, his father an engineer. Yet, his rise to fame was anything but traditional. While studying Geography at Obafemi Awolowo University, he was the class clown, earning the title “Most Jovial Student” in secondary school.

During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Folagade began creating comedic skits from home. In 2021, he introduced “Mama Deola,” a sharp-witted Nigerian mother character that struck a chord across ethnic and generational lines, quickly going viral.

His journey wasn’t without sacrifice; he once traveled from Ile-Ife to Lagos to film a scene for just N20,000. His dedication paid off-by 2025, he was Nigeria’s top male skitmaker for three consecutive quarters, amassing 99 million views in Q3 alone.

Folagade now partners with global brands like Netflix, Coca-Cola, Toyota, KFC, and MTN. He has earned accolades including the Trendupp Award for “The Force of Comedy Skits.” From a university jokester to a digital storyteller amplifying African narratives worldwide, his ascent highlights the power of authentic humor.

5. Olalekan Fabilola: Guardian of Yoruba Language and Culture

MOI Recognition: Media Visionary of the Year

Raised in Oba-Ile, Akure, Olalekan Maxwell Fabilola was taught by his mother to write Yoruba with tonal marks, fostering a deep love for his native tongue. However, his school environment discouraged speaking Yoruba, and he struggled with English.

While studying Computer Science at Covenant University, Olalekan developed a Yoruba keyboard using QBASIC and created software translating 5,000 Yoruba proverbs between English and Yoruba, earning departmental honors in 2008.

He founded eayoruba.com, an online platform offering live Yoruba language classes and cultural content. He also authored The Ancient Wisdom-Òwe Yorùbá, a collection of 500 Yoruba proverbs.

His flagship project, Masoyinbo (“Don’t Speak English”), is a Yoruba language game show where contestants answer ten questions entirely in Yoruba to win N1 million, with penalties for English usage. The show has featured celebrities like Funke Akindele and Falz. Only Fuji legend Saheed Osupa and actor Baba Ajobiewe have answered all questions correctly, though neither claimed the full prize due to English slips.

From a boy punished for speaking his mother tongue to a cultural entrepreneur preserving Yoruba heritage, Olalekan’s work exemplifies how embracing one’s roots can inspire societal transformation.

6. Chess in Slums Africa: Empowering Youth Through Strategy

MOI Recognition: Social Enterprise of the Year

Children playing chess in Lagos slums

While Tunde Onakoya is the face of Chess in Slums Africa, the organization represents a collective vision born from adversity. Beyond Tunde’s leadership, the initiative has sparked transformative change across entire communities.

One inspiring example is Ferdinand, a 10-year-old with cerebral palsy who triumphed in a Makoko chess tournament in 2021. Another is Jamiu Onakoya, a 17-year-old whom Tunde adopted after the tragic loss of his sister. Jamiu even taught football star Patrice Evra how to play chess under the Oshodi Under-bridge, proving these children are not just beneficiaries but future champions.

Partnering with Chess.com, the organization has reached thousands of children in Lagos’s toughest neighborhoods. By integrating chess with STEM education and emotional development, Chess in Slums Africa equips youth with critical thinking, resilience, and confidence. This movement is reshaping narratives and opening doors for marginalized African children.

7. Dr. Moji Davids: Agriculture Innovator and Wellness Advocate

MOI Recognition: Woman of Steel (Female Trailblazer Award)

Dr. Moji Davids at XtraLarge Farms

Known affectionately as “Farmer Moji Davids,” Dr. Moji’s path was far from straightforward. A trained accountant who spent years abroad, she returned to Nigeria with her husband, Farmer Seyi Davids, to launch XtraLarge Farms & Resorts in 2009.

From humble beginnings, they expanded to 14 farm locations nationwide, with offices spanning the UK, Dubai, USA, Europe, and Canada. In 2016, XtraLarge Farms pioneered digital farming technology in Nigeria, enabling nearly 100,000 members to engage in agriculture remotely.

Dr. Moji is passionate about organic farming and nutrition, having personally reversed fatty liver disease through dietary changes. Her company produces 21 branded products and is developing Africa’s first “Foodspital,” a hospital that treats illnesses through food therapy rather than conventional medicine.

XtraLarge Farms has earned accolades such as Nigeria’s Best World Class Quality Farming Organization and Africa’s Most Innovative Farming Organization. In 2025, they made history by hosting the World Agritourism Festival simultaneously in Nigeria and the UK, with plans to expand to Canada, Australia, and Central Europe in 2026.

From accountant to agripreneur, Dr. Moji Davids exemplifies how reinvention and visionary leadership can revolutionize agriculture and health across Africa.
