A San Jose police sergeant is being hailed for extraordinary bravery after surviving a gunshot wound to the head during a violent confrontation with a suspect who had allegedly been on a multi-day crime spree across Northern California.

According to authorities, the incident unfolded after 30-year-old Mohamed Husien of Davis, California, was linked to a series of crimes that began on January 17. Police say the spree started with the theft of a red Corvette from a Sacramento dealership, followed by armed robberies at a convenience store and a liquor store on McKee Road in San Jose. Investigators allege that Husien continued the following day with two additional robberies on the Peninsula and along Coleman Road.

During an encounter with San Jose police, gunfire erupted. In the exchange, a police sergeant was struck in the head. Despite suffering a fractured skull, the wounded officer reportedly continued returning fire until backup units arrived.

Authorities confirmed that Husien was fatally shot by officers on Wednesday, bringing the rampage to an end.

San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph addressed the incident on Thursday, describing the close call as deeply troubling.

“Coming this close to losing an officer is a nightmare,” Joseph said.

Officials credited the injured sergeant’s actions with helping contain the threat and prevent further harm. The officer is receiving medical care and is expected to recover.

The shooting remains under investigation, as is standard protocol in officer-involved incidents.
