The Federal Government has announced plans to allow accredited journalists to accompany military personnel during selected operations as part of efforts to improve transparency, strengthen public trust, and provide firsthand reports on Nigeria’s security efforts.
The initiative was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a meeting with media executives and security stakeholders.
According to the minister, the move is designed to bridge the information gap between the military and the public by enabling journalists to witness security operations and accurately report developments from the field.
Idris said the government believes that firsthand coverage will help counter misinformation, fake news, and propaganda often spread by criminal groups and other actors seeking to undermine national security efforts.
He noted that journalists embedded with military units would receive appropriate security briefings and operate under clearly defined guidelines to ensure their safety and the success of ongoing operations.
The minister stressed that the programme would not compromise operational secrecy, explaining that only carefully selected assignments would be open to media participation after thorough risk assessments by security agencies.
He added that sensitive information capable of jeopardising missions or endangering personnel would remain protected.
Media stakeholders welcomed the proposal, describing it as a positive step toward improving public access to credible information about military activities.
They, however, urged the government to guarantee the safety, independence, and professional freedom of journalists participating in the programme.
Security experts also noted that embedding journalists with troops is a practice adopted in several countries to provide accurate battlefield reporting while fostering public confidence in military operations.
They emphasised the need for proper training, safety protocols, and cooperation between the armed forces and the media.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to promoting responsible journalism and strengthening collaboration with media organisations, expressing confidence that the initiative would contribute to a more informed public and reinforce support for the country’s fight against insecurity.
