APC Addresses Delay in Official Reception of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has provided insight into the reasons behind the postponement of a formal welcome for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who recently transitioned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

Strategic Timing Amid Regional and Religious Considerations

During an interview on TVC on Sunday, February 8, APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda explained that the deferment is a deliberate strategy aimed at respecting regional dynamics, especially in the northern states. “Our focus is currently on Kano and the northern region, where the majority of the population observes Ramadan,” Yilwatda stated. “Given the religious sensitivities during this period, we prioritized formalizing relationships with northern governors before turning our attention to the southern states, where Ramadan does not have the same impact.”

Clarifying Misconceptions About Fubara’s Authority

Yilwatda emphasized that the delay should not be interpreted as a reflection of Governor Fubara’s standing or influence within the party. “This approach is about acknowledging the unique sensitivities of each community and region. It is not a question of Fubara lacking authority or legitimacy,” he asserted.

Refuting Claims of Leadership Challenges in Rivers State

Addressing rumors that Fubara is facing difficulties asserting his leadership within the APC in Rivers State, the party chairman dismissed such allegations, challenging critics to present any formal grievances. “Who has officially complained? What petition exists? I urge anyone with evidence to come forward. Without formal complaints, the media should refrain from speculating and passing judgment,” Yilwatda remarked.

Distinguishing Party Activities from Independent Support Groups

In response to inquiries about support groups allegedly backing former Governor Nyesom Wike under President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ initiative, Yilwatda clarified that these groups operate independently and are not affiliated with the APC’s official organizational framework. “Support groups function separately and do not fall under the jurisdiction of the party chairman’s office,” he explained.

Context: Political Tensions and Fubara’s Defection

The scrutiny of Fubara’s leadership emerges against the backdrop of a prolonged political dispute in Rivers State. His relationship with ex-Governor Nyesom Wike deteriorated following a power tussle in 2023, which escalated to the extent that President Tinubu imposed a six-month state of emergency in the state.

Governor Fubara officially joined the APC on December 9, 2025, a move widely interpreted as positioning himself for a 2027 re-election campaign and consolidating his political base after his fallout with Wike.

Looking Ahead: APC’s Regional Prioritization and Political Strategy

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the APC’s careful sequencing of formal receptions and political alignments underscores the party’s sensitivity to Nigeria’s diverse religious and regional landscape. This approach aims to maintain unity and avoid alienating key constituencies during critical periods such as Ramadan, which affects millions of Nigerians in the north.
