“It is imperative that we not only recognize the challenges but also develop and execute practical remedies,” Kingi asserted, encouraging African researchers and innovators to focus their efforts within the continent. He also underscored the critical role of sustainable domestic funding mechanisms, pointing to emerging opportunities such as leveraging capital markets, establishing sovereign wealth funds, and fostering public-private partnerships to finance health initiatives.
WHO’s Commitment to African Health System Autonomy
In a keynote address, Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo, WHO Director of Programme Management, reiterated the organization’s dedication to supporting Africa in building resilient, self-reliant health systems. He emphasized, “Health systems in Africa must be conceptualized, governed, and owned by Africans themselves. Transforming a single hospital can catalyze change across the continent; saving one life can inspire millions.” Dr. Diallo urged policymakers to focus on creating sustainable infrastructures, empowered communities, and enduring health solutions.

Uganda‘s Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, highlighted the necessity of reinforcing health systems to guarantee equitable access and high-quality care, spanning from primary healthcare to specialized medical services. She advocated for active community participation as a foundation for making informed health choices and stressed the importance of widespread health education to empower citizens.
A Pan-African Gathering of Health Leaders and Innovators
The summit convened a diverse group of influential figures, including Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, and Minister of Science and Technology, Hon. Monica Musenero. Delegates from Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Kenya, alongside policymakers, researchers, healthcare practitioners, private sector representatives, civil society members, and development partners, engaged in strategic discussions. The event served as a continental forum to highlight African-driven innovations and forge actionable commitments aimed at enhancing health sovereignty, resilience, and equity across Africa.

The summit culminated with the presentation of the Heroes in Health Award, Uganda’s premier accolade established in 2019. This award honors outstanding individuals, organizations, innovations, services, products, and programs that have significantly advanced healthcare delivery and outcomes within Uganda, inspiring continued excellence and dedication in the sector.
