A Nigerian businessman based in South Africa has pushed back against efforts to close down his establishment, stating that his operations are fully legal and contribute positively to the local economy.
In the viral video, the businessman maintained that he possesses all the necessary documentation required to run his enterprise and questioned why he was being targeted despite complying with the country’s business regulations.
“I run my business legally,” he said, adding that his company provides employment opportunities for approximately 30 South Africans. According to him, the livelihoods of these workers and their families could be affected if the business is forced to cease operations.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over xenophobic sentiments in parts of South Africa, where some foreign-owned businesses have faced hostility and accusations of taking opportunities away from locals. However, critics of such actions argue that many immigrant entrepreneurs contribute significantly to economic growth through job creation, tax payments, and investment.
The Nigerian entrepreneur appealed for fairness and due process, urging authorities and community members to distinguish between undocumented activities and businesses operating legitimately under the law.
The development has sparked debate on social media, with many users expressing support for the businessman and calling for the protection of lawful enterprises regardless of the nationality of their owners. Others stressed the importance of ensuring that all businesses, local or foreign-owned, comply with existing regulations.
As discussions surrounding immigration, employment, and economic participation continue in South Africa, the incident highlights the delicate balance between addressing local concerns and upholding the rights of individuals who legally contribute to the country’s economy.
