Supreme court sacks Lyon as Bayelsa Governor, barely 24 hours to swearing-in

With less than 24 hours to the official swearing-in ceremony of David Lyon as the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, a five-man judiciary led by Justice Mary Odili has sacked him as the Governor and handed the reins to PDP’s candidate.

This ruling was declared on Thursday, 13 February 2020.

The supreme court’s decision comes as a result of false information provided to INEC by David Lyon’s deputy Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo.

The court’s decision is a reversal from its ruling that affirms his position as the Governor-elect of Bayelsa State yesterday, 12th of February 2020.

Justice Ejembi Eko of the Supreme Court has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retrieve the Certificate of Return issued to David Lyon and his deputy.

The court further ordered INEC to declare the next party with the most number of qualified votes and geographical spread as the winner.

With PDP being the next party with the most number of votes, it’s logical that the seat will go to Douye Diri.
