Political campaigns ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election are gathering momentum as President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party leader Peter Obi step up efforts to secure the support of voters in Northern Nigeria, a region widely regarded as decisive in determining the outcome of national elections.

The North remains the country’s largest voting bloc, making it a strategic battleground for the leading contenders. Political observers note that each candidate is adopting different approaches to strengthen alliances with influential northern politicians, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and grassroots supporters in a bid to gain an electoral advantage.

President Tinubu is expected to campaign on the achievements of his administration while consolidating support within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar is working to expand the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), hoping to unite various political interests against the incumbent government. Peter Obi is also seeking to build on his growing popularity, particularly among young voters, while increasing his influence across northern states.

Analysts believe that issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, agriculture, infrastructure, and regional inclusion will dominate campaign discussions as candidates compete to convince northern voters they offer the best path forward for the country.

With political realignments continuing and party structures taking shape ahead of the election, the contest for Northern Nigeria’s support is expected to become even more competitive, reinforcing the region’s pivotal role in deciding the nation’s next president.
