Some of the corp members have received the first payment of the newly increased Federal minimum wage promised by the Buhari administration. The previous allowance of N19,000 ($60) was increased to N33,000 monthly ($90)

Many of the corps members couldn’t hide their excitement after receiving the alert of the increased allowance. Of note are the Youth Corps members serving in Enugu State.

It is reported that the corps members have been expectant of the increment in the allowance and were shocked to have gotten the allowance through a credit alert through their banks at 2 am on Friday, 31 January 2020.

The Youth Corps members, expressing joy, said that the payment was a New Year gift from the Federal Government.

Joseph Odichi, one of the Youth Corps members, speaking to NAN said it was like a dream when he received a phone call at 3 am from a fellow corps member about the increment.

“This is another Good Friday for us,” he said joyfully.

Arowosegbe Busayo, another NYSC member said she was in disbelief.

“We have been expecting to receive this N33,000 since April last year but we thank God that finally it has been paid.

“Most of us could not sleep after the news broke at about 2 a.m. even though some banks are yet to pay,” she said.

One Divine Umoh even said that the increase in their allowance was too good to be true.

“Government has failed us in the past with their promises but this issue of the minimum wage has changed my perception.

“We pray that things will get better in 2020 because people are really suffering and we urge the federal government to look into the payment of our arrears,” she said
