Joint Task Force Intervenes to Free Kidnap Victim Amid Armed Banditry on Kano-Katsina Border
In a decisive security operation, personnel from the Joint Task Force (JTF) stationed at Faruruwa successfully liberated a kidnapped individual during a confrontation with armed bandits along the border between Kano and Katsina states.
Intelligence-Led Operation Initiated at Dawn
According to Major Zubair Babatunde, the official spokesperson for the Nigerian Army’s 3 Brigade based in Kano, the mission was launched following reliable intelligence received around 1:00 a.m. This intelligence indicated the movement of heavily armed criminals originating from the Daurawa and Kira regions in Katsina, advancing towards Kano.
Rapid Deployment and Engagement
Troops deployed from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Yankwada swiftly organized a combat patrol to intercept the suspects. Upon reaching the Ungwan Dogo and Ungwan Tudu areas, the soldiers encountered the bandits, resulting in an intense firefight.
Bandits Routed and Victim Rescued
The bandits were overwhelmed and retreated chaotically towards the Matazu local government area in Katsina. During the clash, the JTF successfully rescued Rabiu Halilu, a 38-year-old man who had been held captive. Halilu sustained a gunshot injury to his leg while in captivity and was promptly transported to the JTF Faruruwa medical facility for urgent care.
Recovery of Stolen Property and Equipment
In addition to the rescue, the troops recovered three motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing bandits. They also seized an unspecified number of cattle believed to have been stolen during the bandits’ criminal activities, highlighting the ongoing issue of livestock rustling in the region.
Ongoing Security Measures to Curb Banditry
Major Babatunde emphasized that the troops remain vigilant, maintaining heightened patrols and surveillance to deter further criminal acts. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance security and stability in border communities vulnerable to bandit attacks.
Context and Current Security Landscape
Banditry and kidnappings have surged in Northwestern Nigeria, with recent reports indicating a 15% increase in abductions in the Kano-Katsina corridor over the past year. The Nigerian military’s proactive stance, exemplified by operations like this, plays a critical role in safeguarding civilians and restoring peace in affected areas.
