Youth Peace Accord Signing in Kaduna

Youth Leaders from Northern and Southern Nigeria Forge Historic Peace Agreement Ahead of 2027 Elections

In an unprecedented demonstration of solidarity, young Nigerians from both the Northern and Southern regions have united to endorse a peace agreement designed to foster national unity as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. This landmark pact underscores a collective commitment to transcend ethnic and religious divides, emphasizing the pivotal role of youth in shaping Nigeria’s political and socio-economic trajectory.

Gathering at Kaduna’s Arewa House: A Symbol of Unity

The event convened representatives from the North, South-East, South-South, and South-West zones at the historic Arewa House in Kaduna, a venue symbolic of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. Organized by the National Youth Alliance (NYA), the assembly culminated in the signing of a peace charter titled “The Birthing of a New Nigeria.” This document embodies the participants’ pledge to engage peacefully, pursue shared objectives, and collaborate actively as the nation prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.

Addressing the Challenges of Youth Manipulation and Division

Historically, Nigerian youths have often been exploited as instruments in political conflicts, with persistent issues such as unemployment, insecurity, and poverty rendering them susceptible to manipulation. Abubakar Mohammed-General, Vice-Chairman of the NYA (North), highlighted the long-standing exploitation by political elites who have deliberately sown discord among young people through misinformation and divisive narratives.

“For years, political actors have pitted us against each other along ethnic and religious lines, using false information to keep us divided and distracted from contributing positively to our nation,” he remarked.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s Indivisibility

Echoing this sentiment, Meshack Onyeche, Vice-Chairman of the NYA (South), emphasized the non-negotiable nature of Nigeria’s unity. He called on youths nationwide to reject divisive politics and resist attempts to fracture the country along regional lines.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, and no force can break our unity. We must rise above politics that seek to divide us,” Onyeche asserted.

The Evolution of the National Youth Alliance

Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, the Convener of the National Youth Alliance, recounted the organization’s origins, noting that their initial bid to register as a political party was denied by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Undeterred, the group transformed into a dynamic movement focused on advocacy, peacebuilding, and political education.

Abbas criticized political leaders for prioritizing personal and familial interests over national welfare, often misleading the youth in the process.

“Our leaders have long misled the youth, focusing on their own gains rather than the collective progress of Nigeria,” he stated.

Promoting Cross-Regional Collaboration Amid National Challenges

The Kaduna summit reflects a growing momentum among youth organizations to foster dialogue and unity in the face of escalating insecurity, economic difficulties, and democratic uncertainties. Many youth advocates argue that strengthening cooperation across Nigeria’s diverse regions is essential to curbing violence and inflammatory rhetoric as the 2027 elections draw near.

Since its inception, the National Youth Alliance has positioned itself as a vital link bridging young Nigerians from different parts of the country, championing peace and political awareness. The peace accord signed at this event symbolizes a shared resolve among youths to present a united front and reject exploitation during politically sensitive periods.

Looking Ahead: Youth as Architects of a Peaceful Nigeria

With Nigeria’s youth population estimated at over 60% of the total demographic, their role in shaping the nation’s future cannot be overstated. This accord not only marks a significant step toward mitigating regional tensions but also sets a precedent for youth-led initiatives aimed at sustainable peace and inclusive governance.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the commitment demonstrated by these young leaders offers hope for a more harmonious and prosperous nation, driven by collaboration rather than division.
