Department of State Services Releases Abia Man Following Exoneration

Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), has authorized the release of Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, who was detained in July 2022 on accusations of involvement with the banned Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

Compensation and Medical Support Granted

Originating from Isuikwuato Local Government Area in Abia State, Nwafor has been awarded a compensation sum of N5 million in recognition of his wrongful arrest. Additionally, he will receive complimentary medical care as part of the restitution package.

Thorough Investigation Clears Nwafor

Reliable insiders within the security apparatus revealed that an exhaustive probe by DSS operatives cleared Nwafor of all allegations. “The DG mandated a comprehensive reassessment of all unresolved cases, and Nwafor’s situation was among those meticulously reviewed,” the source disclosed.

Other Wrongfully Detained Individuals Also Released

Alongside Nwafor, three other men from Abia State-Udemba, Onyedikachi, and Eze-who were similarly suspected of IPOB affiliations, have been freed following the investigations.

Leadership Emphasizes Accountability and Redress

The source further explained, “Mr. Ajayi recognizes that errors can occur in the course of duty. His administration prioritizes accountability and actively seeks to rectify any injustices committed by the agency.”

Historical Precedents of Compensation Under Current DSS Leadership

This approach is consistent with previous actions taken by the DSS under Ajayi’s stewardship. For instance, a Jos-based entrepreneur mistakenly shot during a 2016 security operation received N20 million in compensation. Similarly, an Abuja-based businesswoman wrongfully detained on oil bunkering allegations was awarded N10 million.

Ongoing Commitment to Justice for the Wrongfully Accused

In recent months, three young men detained on unfounded IPOB membership claims were released and compensated. Last month alone, the DG disbursed N10 million to the Abuja Igbo businesswoman and allocated an additional N10 million to be shared among five other individuals. This pattern of restitution underscores the DSS’s renewed dedication to justice and fairness under Ajayi’s leadership.
