Real Estate Stakeholders Praise Oyo State’s Progress, Calls For More Collaboration

Oyo State: Pioneering Sustainable and Innovative Real Estate Development

Oyo State has distinguished itself as a frontrunner in smart, environmentally conscious, and investor-friendly real estate development. This progress was highlighted by Hon. Olakunle Akinsete, Special Adviser on Housing and Urban Development to Governor Seyi Makinde, during the recent Real Estate Conference 2025.

Revolutionizing Oyo’s Real Estate Landscape

In the last six years, Oyo State has experienced transformative growth in its real estate sector, becoming a vital pillar of the state’s economic development. The current administration has focused on reinforcing institutional frameworks, modernizing land management practices, and expanding access to serviced land for both governmental and private initiatives.

These reforms are supported by significant investments in infrastructure enhancement, urban renewal projects, and the promotion of public-private partnerships, all of which have broadened opportunities for real estate ventures.

Real Estate Conference 2025: Fostering Strategic Collaboration

Held at the JOGOR Event Centre in Ibadan, the Real Estate Conference 2025 was jointly organized by the Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) and the Oyo State Government. Themed “Real Estate and Economic Development: Strategies for Success,” the event provided a platform for industry leaders and policymakers to discuss innovative approaches to accelerate growth in Oyo’s dynamic real estate market.

Akinsete underscored the necessity of a collaborative approach between government bodies and private sector stakeholders to ensure the sector’s expansion is both strategic and inclusive. He advocated for data-driven policies, innovation-led development, and transparent regulatory systems to underpin this vision.

Real Estate as a Catalyst for Economic Prosperity

“Globally, real estate serves as a critical driver of economic progress, employment generation, and investment attraction, shaping cities that are both livable and inclusive,” Akinsete stated. “Oyo State is boldly embracing this potential by placing real estate development at the core of its economic agenda.”

The administration remains committed to overhauling land administration, upgrading infrastructure, and promoting urban regeneration. Nonetheless, Akinsete acknowledged that sustained efforts are essential to maintain growth momentum and ensure the sector’s development is equitable and environmentally sustainable.

Voices from Key Industry Leaders

Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and keynote speaker at the conference, lauded the real estate sector’s pivotal role in urban growth, job creation, and wealth generation. He praised initiatives such as the digitization of land records through the Oyo State Geographical Information System (OYOGIS), which has streamlined land documentation and minimized disputes.

Ogundoyin also highlighted reforms in physical planning and urban development that have enhanced Oyo State’s appeal, particularly Ibadan, attracting real estate investors from major Nigerian cities like Lagos and Abuja.

Overcoming Challenges to Unlock Sector Potential

Despite promising advancements, Ogundoyin acknowledged ongoing challenges including complex legislation, bureaucratic inefficiencies, inadequate infrastructure, multiple taxation layers, security issues, and limited access to financing. He emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive legal and institutional reforms to address these obstacles.

“Effective collaboration among government, private sector, and professional organizations is vital,” he asserted, noting that the conference exemplified such synergy. He also commended the government’s emphasis on public-private partnerships, citing affordable housing initiatives like Ajoda New Town and various Government Residential Areas (GRAs) as successful examples.

Legislative Milestones Supporting Real Estate Growth

Under Ogundoyin’s stewardship, the Oyo State House of Assembly has passed critical legislation including the Real Estate Properties Protection Law, 2023, and the Land Control and Administration Law, 2023. These laws have significantly enhanced the security and efficiency of real estate transactions and investments within the state.

Future Outlook: Sustaining Oyo’s Real Estate Momentum

As Oyo State continues to establish itself as a hub for innovative and sustainable real estate development, the combined efforts of government, developers, investors, and other stakeholders will be essential. By fostering innovation, ensuring regulatory transparency, and addressing existing challenges, the state is poised to maintain its status as a premier destination for real estate investment and economic advancement.
