The Governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde, in a Monday broadcast, has assured the citizens of the state of their rights to peaceful protests, OYOGist.com reports.
The Governor said peaceful protests are a legitimate way for citizens to express their grievances to the government, and it is unacceptable for anyone to be hurt during a protest.
“As I stated clearly in my earlier statement, peaceful protests are a legitimate way for citizens to make their grievances known to the government and it is totally unacceptable for anyone to be hurt during such protests,” Seyi Makinde said.
The governor revealed that he had a meeting with security officers in the state
“Last night, I had an emergency meeting with the heads of security agencies in Oyo State. I’ve again restated my position on the ongoing protests in Oyo State to them and we have agreed that the Police should take a backseat as other security agencies take the front-line in securing the lives of protesters,” Seyi Makinde further revealed.
“Therefore, we have deployed members of Operation Burst to the hot spots of the protests, especially in Ogbomosho to ensure that as people protests, they would not be harrassed or brutalized.”
