OYOGist.com has learned that amid the backlash over the death sentence passed on a Kano resident and the corruption allegations levelled on the governor over an alleged bribery video, Kano again has come under some political tension as the Elders council have fallen out with the governor over his insistence to acquire a N300Billion loan facility from China.
The elder’s forum, under the platform of the Kano Unity Forum (KUF) made the plea to the President, Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly and the Ministry of Finance, to put a halt on Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s request and insistence to take a N300 billion loan from China.
The elders made this plea through a petition signed by the leader of the forum, Alh Bashir Tofa, a frontline politician and industrialist from the state. Tofa, a former Presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) was also late chief MKO Abiola’s rival during the botched June 12 elections.
The group noted that the government has made known the aim of the loan which was reported to be used for the construction of the Phase one component of the kano metropolis Light Mono Rail project.
The elders, however, expressed grave concern that the terms and conditions of the loan agreement have been shrouded in secrecy and the public is not aware of the contracts covering the loan request.
They also warned that if the Governor still goes ahead with the project, the elders will be forced to institute all necessary court processes and other lawful means to stop the project.
Recall the national assembly has recently been embroiled in controversy over the debt profile of the country as it concerns the Chinese loans being taken by the ministry of transportation on behalf of the FG.
