The Plateau State Police Command has arraigned 14 motorists before a magistrate court for allegedly driving vehicles with concealed or improperly displayed number plates, in violation of traffic and security regulations.
The suspects were arrested during a statewide enforcement operation aimed at tackling the growing use of covered or obscured vehicle registration plates, a practice security agencies say hampers crime detection and public safety.
According to the police, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security across Plateau State by ensuring that all vehicles on public roads are properly identified. Authorities noted that criminals often exploit concealed number plates to evade law enforcement and commit offences without being easily traced.
The defendants appeared before the court on charges related to the unlawful concealment of vehicle registration numbers. Prosecutors urged the court to take the matter seriously, stressing that the offence poses a significant threat to public security.
The police also warned motorists against covering, altering, or defacing their number plates, emphasizing that such actions constitute an offence under Nigerian law. Vehicle owners were advised to comply with registration and identification requirements to avoid arrest and prosecution.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing traffic and security regulations and urged members of the public to support ongoing efforts to improve safety and curb criminal activities in the state.
