The ex-Police officer involved in the killing of unarmed black man, George Floyd has been arrested on Friday, 29th of May and charged with 3rd degree murder and manslaughter, OYOGist.com has gathered.
On Monday, the 25th of May, 2020, a white officer in Minneapolis, later identified as Derek Chauvin, in the company of 3 other officers, was seen in a viral video kneeling on the neck of a black man, George Floyd, who later died as a result.
George Floyd, during the first half of 7 minutes that Derek pinned him on the neck pleaded for air, and cried out in pain telling the officer that he couldn’t breathe and that his stomach hurts.
The four policemen were later fired, and an investigation was launched into the case.
This quickly drew ire from the people, especially the black community, with the people immediately going on to protest the murder of George Floyd and call for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the officers involved.
The protest lasted for 3 days, with buildings and shops looted and burned in Minneapolis, while protests erupted in other cities. The Minneapolis Third Police Precinct was later burned down.
On Friday, 29th of May, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced that Derek Chauvin was charged and arrested on Friday afternoon.
