For over five decades, the traditional khaki uniform has been the ultimate symbol of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) experience in Nigeria.
Whether you wore it with pride or counted down the days until you could take it off, it is an undeniable part of Nigeria’s cultural landscape.
However, a massive shift is on the horizon. The iconic khaki is officially being phased out to make way for beautifully patterned, locally made Adire fabric.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, confirmed the historic reform during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. The decision follows a comprehensive overhaul approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC)—marking the first major restructuring of the NYSC since its inception 53 years ago.
According to Minister Olawande, switching to Adire isn’t just a fashion statement; it’s a strategic economic move. By shifting to indigenous textiles, the government intends to inject money directly back into Nigeria’s local industries.
“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country.”
