In a dramatic culmination of years of escalating friction, the military-led government of Burkina Faso has formally severed all diplomatic relations with its former colonial ruler, France, effective immediately.
The announcement, delivered in an official communiqué by Government Spokesperson and Communications Minister Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, marks an absolute institutional break between the two nations and signals a permanent geopolitical shift in the volatile Sahel region.
According to the Burkinabè authorities, the decision followed a “comprehensive and thorough assessment” of the existing bilateral relations. The government stated that the foundational requirements for international state-to-state cooperation—specifically mutual respect, reciprocal trust, and absolute non-interference in internal affairs—are no longer being met by Paris.
