The United States military has carried out a series of targeted air strikes against positions inside Iran. The operation, executed by US Central Command (Centcom), comes as a direct response to a recent Iranian assault on a commercial cargo vessel transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The military action marks a sharp and dangerous escalation in regional tensions, abruptly disrupting recent diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing global shipping lanes.
A central pillar of the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) required Iran to guarantee the safe, unhindered passage of merchant shipping through the Strait of Hormuz for a 60-day window. However, the truce shattered when an international cargo ship was struck within the corridor.
While Western officials viewed the assault as an unprovoked breach of the safety agreement, Tehran quickly offered a different narrative. The Iranian government claimed the vessel was targeted because it was navigating an “unauthorized shipping lane,” fundamentally violating the terms of passage.
