Operatives of the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested a 23-year-old student of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State over false alarm of a purported bandit invasion in Bayelsa and school attack.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Edebor, who confirmed the arrest, said the 300-student was responsible for originating and posting the misleading report and false security alarm that caused panic in parts of Bayelsa State.
“As many residents may recall, on the 5th of June 2026, a social media post circulated widely alleging that bandits had infiltrated parts of Bayelsa State and that militants has seized the alleged bandits while demanding ransom for their release. The publication generated widespread concern among residents and triggered panic in several communities,” the CP said.
“As a result of the false report, parents rushed to schools to pick up their children, commercial activities were temporarily disrupted, and many citizens became apprehensive about their safety.
“Upon receiving reports of the circulation of the false information, I immediately led the deployment of operational and intelligence assets across the affected areas.
“Following extensive on-the-spot assessment and intelligence gathering, it became evident that the information being circulated was entirely false and without any factual basis
“Through intelligence-led policing, digital investigation, and technical tracking, detectives successfully identified, tracked, and arrested one Promise Etete, 23 years old, in connection with originating and posting the misleading report.
“The suspect is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Bayelsa State Command, and has made useful statements assisting ongoing investigations.”
He warmed the general public over cypher crimes, insisting that “cyberspace is not beyond the reach of law enforcement.”
“I therefore warn individuals who use social media irresponsibly to desist from such acts. I also urge residents to verify security-related information before sharing it.
