Sanitation Offenders To Be Fined Or Imprisoned As Council Chairman Signs Sanitation Bill Into Law

The Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Goegre Alli, on Tuesday 22nd September 2020, signed into law, the Environmental Sanitation Bill which makes it an offence for residents of Otukpo who ignore their environmental sanitation, after the bill was signed into law by the Otukpo Legislative assembly, oyogist.com reports.

The law stipulates that violators and sanitation offenders will be fined between 1,000 naira and 30,000 naira or imprisoned or made to render community service, depending on the gravity of the charges preferred against them by the Otukpo Environmental Sanitation Mobile Court.

According to the law, Otukpo residents who fail to clean drains in front of their homes and business areas such as restaurants, hotels, stores and schools, amongst others, will be fined in accordance with the provisions of the Otukpo Environmental Sanitation Law 2020, as passed.

The bill was sponsored by Hon Ben Idah, the Counselor representing Ewulo ward in the Otukpo Legislative Assembly.

Hon. George Alli commended the Counselors for their untiring effort in ensuring the timely passage of the bill into law.

According to Alli; “With this law, the environmental sanitation taskforce now have enough teeth to enforce sanitation laws in our land. People should learn to take care of their surroundings. Cleanliness, they said, is next to godliness”.
