Today, 3rd of August, 2020, Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, unveiled the first VW vehicles assembled in the newly established VW Assembly Plant in Ghana.

The models being assembled are Tiguan, Teramont, Amarok, Caddy, Polo and Passat, OYOGist.com has gathered.

“The VW assembly plant will create a lot of highly skilled jobs, reduce the high amounts of foreign exchange used in the importation of second-hand vehicles, and, thereby, help strengthen the Ghanaian currency, whilst, at the same time, earn the nation foreign exchange through the exportation of made-in-Ghana vehicles,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Several other automobile companies have started preparation to build and assemble vehicles in the West African country.

“With the Chinese company, Sinotruk, already engaged in the assembly of trucks in Ghana, I am hopeful that other global automobile companies, which have indicated their preparedness to set-up shop in Ghana, will soon follow the remarkable, pioneering example of Volkswagen”, the President added.

Also speaking at the occasion was the VW Ghana CEO, Jeffrey J.O Peprah. Jeffrey described leading the West African Country’s VW branch as an honor.

“I am honored and very proud as VW Ghana CEO to officially launch our Volkswagen Ghana entity which is another milestone in the documented history of our beloved country,” Jeffrey said.

“And unveiling of the first VW vehicles assembled in our new VW Ghana Assembly Facility in Accra,” Peprah continued. “Certainly belongs to our almanacs so that our next generation is reminded of the day Volkswagen came to Ghana.

“The Government of Ghana Automotive Development Policy has great potential to maximize the car industry in the country, which will create highly skilled jobs, reduce import bill, stimulate growth in small enterprises as part of supply chain & other sectors.”

Ghana has been on an industrialization drive to transform the country’s economy.
