British authorities have boarded and detained a tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” while it attempted to transit through the English Channel, marking a significant escalation in the enforcement of sanctions related to the war in Ukraine.
According to reports, the operation involved British armed forces and other security agencies, who intercepted the vessel following intelligence that it was linked to efforts aimed at circumventing international restrictions on Russian oil exports. The tanker, identified as the Smyrtos, was detained during a six-hour operation off the southern coast of England.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the interception as a major step in disrupting Russia’s ability to finance its military campaign in Ukraine. He stated that the UK would continue to take decisive action against networks and entities that help sustain Moscow’s war efforts.
The so-called “shadow fleet” refers to a network of ageing tankers that allegedly transport Russian oil while employing tactics such as changing flags, concealing ownership structures, and operating outside conventional maritime oversight to evade sanctions imposed by Western nations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the UK’s action, thanking British authorities for their efforts and calling on other European countries to strengthen measures against vessels involved in sanction evasion.
The incident is believed to be the first time the United Kingdom has independently led an operation to intercept a suspected Russian shadow-fleet tanker in its waters. Security officials said investigations into the vessel and its cargo are ongoing.
The development highlights increasing international efforts to tighten restrictions on Russia’s energy exports, which many Western governments argue remain a crucial source of funding for the Kremlin’s military operations in Ukraine. As geopolitical tensions persist, maritime enforcement actions such as this are expected to play an increasingly prominent role in the broader sanctions regime against Moscow.
British officials said the operation targeted the tanker Smyrtos, which they believe forms part of Russia’s shadow fleet used to bypass sanctions on oil exports. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the seizure as a blow to Russia’s war financing efforts.
