Intensified Search for Kidnappers After Ransom Bearer’s Death in Adamawa

Security agencies have launched an extensive operation to apprehend kidnappers following the grim discovery of a ransom bearer’s lifeless body in Girei Local Government Area, Adamawa State. This incident has heightened concerns over the rising wave of abductions in the region.

Incident Overview and Initial Abductions

According to security expert Zagazola Makama, the case was officially reported on February 21, 2026, around 4:00 p.m. by Aminu Modibbo Bakura, the Village Head of Mallam Madugu, at the local police station. The initial abduction occurred on February 10, when two residents, Usman Ibrahim (45) and Abubakar Arwa (65), were forcibly taken by unidentified gunmen early in the morning. The victims were held at an undisclosed location, and the incident went unreported for several days.

Ransom Negotiations and Subsequent Kidnappings

Following the kidnappings, a ransom demand of ₦1 million was arranged. On February 18, at approximately 5:00 p.m., two other locals, Abubakar Abdullahi (28) and Ahmadu Ibrahim (55), were sent to deliver the ransom payment. Tragically, they too were abducted by the same assailants, escalating the severity of the situation.

Discovery of the Ransom Bearer’s Body

The case took a darker turn on February 21 at about 2:00 p.m., when the body of Abubakar Abdullahi was found. Police officers who examined the scene noted three gunshot wounds on the deceased and recovered seven spent AK-47 cartridges, indicating a violent confrontation. The body was promptly transported to the Girei Cottage Hospital for a thorough autopsy.

Ongoing Investigations and Security Measures

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are actively underway to identify and capture those responsible for these heinous acts. In response, security forces have intensified patrols and operations throughout Girei and neighboring communities to deter further kidnappings and restore public safety.

Context and Broader Implications

Kidnapping for ransom remains a significant security challenge in Adamawa State and across Nigeria, with recent reports indicating a 15% increase in abduction cases in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced community vigilance and stronger collaboration between residents and law enforcement agencies.

Residents are urged to report suspicious activities promptly and cooperate with security personnel to help curb the menace of kidnapping and related crimes.
